What's best for Side Sleepers

Post by sleepwise » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:39 pm

In your opinion what type of mask do you think is best for those of us who favor sleeping on our sides?
Thanks

I'm a side sleeper, and I've been using the ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face (UMFF) for the nine years I've been on this therapy.
BUT, I think equally or maybe even more important is the type of bed pillow that we use.
I've been using the Chiroflow (also sold under the Mediflow name) water-based pillow long before I started this therapy, and it has worked very well with this therapy.
Standard, fiberfill pillows allow the head to sink too deeply into it and push the mask out of alignment. There have been quite a few pillows on the market that have been designed for or work well with this therapy.

I sleep either on my side or on my stomach. I have used both Resmed Swift FX and Respironics' Nuance Pro and both stayed on.

I second the recommendation for the Swift FX nasal pillow mask for side sleepers. I sleep on my side a lot, and it works for me.

I don't think it really matters what mask as most can be used in any position - as long it fits YOU well, and you can adjust your pillow to make it work right. I use a quattro fx and sleep on my side just fine with a leak line that is pretty much zero all night. But others have trouble with this mask when sleeping on their side.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I have had 0 leaks with the swift fx pillows, but also just last night tried the swift fx nano and found that even more stable on the side. I am a side sleeper so the vast majority of the night my mask is on contact with my pillow. Like Den pointed out, pillow type is just as important. I opted to try a latex pillow from Sleep Country (their house brand) that they say is all purpose. It is preforming perfectly with my mask (sometimes the vent needs redirecting) and had not caused it to leak yet. This pillow supports my neck very well, soft and yet does not allow my head to sink in causing mask fit problems like Den points out. Highly recommended.

The Tap Pap. (period), end of statement.

Stomach sleeper, use regular foam pillows and I can honestly say its like sleeping before the cpap came into the picture. I can lift my head to sleep on the other cheek without rolling over or getting tangled in hoses.

As long as you have about 6 good teeth in your head your good to go.

Another thing you and your dentist will appreciate is that you will be flossing and brushing before going to bed (both your teeth and your Tap Pap), and after waking up.

I am a side sleeper only. I bought and tossed out a bunch of pillows. The one I have used the longest and it is called My Pillow. I got it online at Mypillow.com. My husband uses one too. They are a great pillow, made in the USA, and completely washable and dryable too. Very nice for side sleeping cpap people.

I have used the Aloha recently the longest for side sleeping. Recently tried the Nuance Pro and it's a great nasal pillow mask too - stays put when side sleeping but backstrap is too big and not adjustable so I got the Wisp. It's great for side sleeping too but it's a nasal mask- not pillows. Headgear is massive but it is adjustable.

I am looking into the Tap Pap to see if that would work for me see headgear is not hair friendly lol!

Hope this helps,
Carrie

I'm a side sleeper and use the Wisp, (the headgear is a bit big, wish they'd come up with a better one). I also use a latex pillow and have no leak problems. Many here like the Swift FX but it doesn't work for me, it causes congestion and I can't control the leaks no matter what size I use. I should receive the Swift Nano today, hope it works for me. So, bottom line is finding the mask that works best for you.

i use a breeze nasal pillow mask W/ a thin standard tempurpedic pillow = less flopping because of head & neck, shoulder staying in correct position for me.

I'm a 100 percent side sleeper. Mirage quattro with a temperpedic pillow.

I'm a side sleeper, too. Swift FX plus a firm pillow works great for me. The reason for the firm pillow is to sleep with my head close to the edge and let the mask hang over the end. If I were to use a soft pillow, my head would sink, in and the sides of the pillow would push against the side of the mask.

Hi sleepwise,

I double Bobshouse's advice: TAP PAP

I used the Swift FX before switching to TAP PAP and the TAPPAP is so much more stable. No movement, no leaks. I never wake to readjust the TAP PAP, and I can't say the same about any other mask I've tried.
