Chin straps - what do you think?

Post by birdygirl38@hotmail.com » Sun Jan 19, 2014 12:18 pm

I saw a chin strap searching the web that says it can help OSA sufferers and snorers by keeping the mouth positioned correctly to avoid apnea episodes.
The one I say is a strap that is a closed circle that goes from chin to top of head with openings around the ears.
I have had people tell me to tape or try a chin strap to see if I am mouth breathing.
Not sure if this is what they had in mind?
What do folks think of this? Has anyone tried this or something similar with or in place of CPAP?

It's not going to prevent apnea - just a selling ploy and irresponsible or just plain ignorant, but chinstraps can help if you mouth breathe, but as air can still come out of your lips, they're less effective than a well fitted full face mask or tape.

This is a product that some have found effective for mouth breathing (while using cpap)
A second model is designed to help prevent snoring when apnea is not present.
Enjoy!

If you have a full monitoring CPAP you could check to see if you actually have a problem that requires a chin strap.

I've been using this thing for about five years now.

The funny thing is that I wear it very loosely. I don't have it adjusted even close to being tight enough to keep me from opening my mouth but just having it there keeps me from opening my mouth at night. Before I started using this I was leaking very badly from my mouth. I tried a couple of different chin straps and they were uncomfortable and tape just about gave me a panic attack. It is really weird that it works considering how loose I have it but it does. It is a very light-weight cotton so it isn't hot and there's no stretch to it so it stays however you adjust it.
