Ideal Protien Diet - weight loss and Sleep Apnea

Post by rkuntz » Thu Jan 16, 2014 3:21 pm

Does anyone else have any experience with this diet plan?

After watching my wife lose 35 lbs in 11 weeks on this diet, at her doctors recommendation, and then have her Doc stop her prescriptions for Victosa (Diabetes), Glumetsa (Diabetes) and her Statin because her blood work was normal, I went on it as well. I've lost 15 lbs in the last 3 weeks and get blood work done next week. To be honest I'm not anticipating much relief from my current prescriptions for another 30-40 lbs because I'm so damned fat. I am hoping that once I get below 275 I can tail off the CPAP because that's where I started noticing symptoms on the way up.

Their protein products are weird, of course they claim that everything is gourmet quality, but that's not true. Our dogs don't even beg when we eat it, it's like they don't recognize it as food. Hell I wouldn't eat it if the results weren't so good, I've gotten accidental mouthfuls of saw dust that tasted as good.

Just check out low carb diets, Paleo diets and such
"Ideal protein" when you do it yourself is stuff like steaks and leafy vegetables, no sugar, no potatoes or breads.

+1 on low carb.

Personally, I'm a fan of the ketogenic diet. 70-80% fat. I still try to keep it as paleo as possible so that I limit the number of nitrates, nitrites, and other preservatives.

Also, be careful of taking in too much protein. An excess of protein in your bloodstream can spike your insulin, just like glucose. If you go keto, too much protein would knock you out of it.

I've been keto for 2 weeks now and have lost 15lbs, 1 pant size, 3% points from my BF%, and my blood pressure has also gone down.

Check out this video for a great primer.

If you are using keto for weight loss, check your blood sugar levels frequently.
This can be dangerous if not monitored; but protein does help control cravings.

Ketogenesis isn't dangerous. Ketoacidosis is.

Another plus one for low carb Paleo style with REAL WHOLE FOOD. 70 pounds gone.

But it did not cure my apnea.

I'm not expecting it to cure mine either. I was first diagnosed over 10 years ago at 180lbs. But, the symptoms back then weren't as unbearable as they are now, so I'm hoping for a reduction of my symptoms at the very least. Besides, I just want to be healthier in general.

Congrats on the weight loss, BTW.

Keto does an excellent job of stabilizing blood sugars in the normal range. The only time this is "dangerous" is if you are taking a lot of diabetic meds and dont adjust them accordingly.

As digital pointed out, there's a difference between ketosis and ketoACIDOSIS. Ketosis is no more dangerous than adjusting your CPAP.

Plus it feels great. I'm rarely ever hungry. When I was eating a lot of carbs, I'd have to eat every few hours, or I'd get the low blood sugar shakes.
On keto, and this happened unintentionally, I'm only eating once a day (dinner around 6pm), because I'm just not hungry otherwise. I try to get about 2,000 calories in that meal, but if I fill up before I finish, I don't worry about it because I'm using my stored body fat for energy.

+1 for the low carb or ketogenic lifestyle. I've lost 90+ lbs. on a ketogenic diet. As I first started losing weight, my pressure needs went UP; after about a year, they went down slightly. I still need my cpap even though I'm no longer in the overweight or obese category.

And also count me in as one of those who just forgets to eat....most days I have one meal and a snack; rarely do I ever have two meals any more. I've also almost eliminated my metformin--cut the dosage by 2/3. I'm never hungry and NEVER get the "gotta eat NOW" feelings I used to have all the time when I tried to do the standard low fat/high carb/low calorie diets.

Real food is a great way of life!

Interesting I'd hoped someone who has survived Ketogenic Dieting would come forward with their experiences, Thanks all.
Just to clarify the Ideal Protein Diet is Ketogenic, extremely so. My wife say's we'll transition to Paleo when the time comes, she's leading so I know it'll happen.

Just be careful with eating too much protein. It's fairly insulinogenic, meaning that it can raise your insulin levels almost as much as carbs if you eat too much. Just try to keep you caloric intake of protein to about 20% of your daily intake.

1. I'm not "surviving" a ketogenic diet, I'm thriving. What's not to love about slathering veggies in real butter, not counting calories, and eating to satisfaction. I stopped missing bread and pasta a long time ago, and I make the OCCASIONAL treat, so I don't feel deprived. My health has improved 1000%. I barely "survived" SAD which was slowly and inexorably killing me. But a keto Paleo diet is life giving.

2. I've had a chance to look at the Ideal Protein Diet--looks like a "Jenny Craig for keto" with the prepackaged foods. It does sound convenient and you don't have to think, but one of the things that makes it sustinable for me is that I do have to think and plan and understand what I'm eating, and health has become the most important consideration.

I couldn't find exact ingredients, but the pre-packaged food looked like a lot of soy and skim milk and additives. These are things I avoid for health. There's a huge benefit to eating real, whole food. Paleo can easily be done without the natural sugars, starchy veggies, and limiting the fruit. You might want to consider going paleo now. I'm going to bet you 'd save a lot of money, too.
