Almost to the 5 year mark.

Post by The Texan » Mon Jan 13, 2014 9:21 pm

Hard to believe it was 5 years ago that I was here asking questions to determine which machine and mask I should be looking at. I started with the RemStar M series APAP and bought a PR System 1 APAP so I would have a spare. I have had good luck with the Respironics products and wonder if their newest products are still rated highly. Also, I want a "quiet" machine and the PR 1 is fairly quiet, but the RemStar is not. Also, want a machine with a small footprint for ease of travel.

What is the consensus today of the best machine that will fill my needs? I have a problem with the smaller manufacturers, as we travel and finding help/service in remote places is not feasible. I plan on keeping the PR 1 as my backup and will donate the Series M to the local WICAP. Thanks for the assistance.
Bob

I too have passed my five year mark on CPAP. It's crazy! I love my Resmed 9 Auto set. It's quiet, dependable, has an LCD readout on the screen so you can read your stats every morning. Good luck in your search,

You'll find as many different opinions as there are machines! All are good, but in many cases it seems to come down to what you are used to. I had a ResMed to start with, but returned it because it was an Escape and I didn't like the DME. I have done fine with the PR S1, but might consider a ResMed again if the price is right. Some people don't like the different algorithms the different makers use,but that is probably something you would get used to after a few nights. Good luck in your search.

If the algorithm differences are out of the conversation, the features and functionality of the resmed autoset just stand head and shoulders above the pr1. I have used both, and I absolutely love my autoset's feature list on the LCD (as mentioned above by sleeplessinaz).

I am a year behind you Bob .... can't believe its been that long . I just replaced my old M series with a brand new PR 60 series and wow is it quieter than the M series... big difference. I preferred to stick with the PR since I was used to using it and I know it has been a very good decision ...... its been almost a month and I have not regretted it. Good luck!
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Well, I talked to the DME on Tue and they said the same thing, if it works for you, why change it. So, will probably stay with the PR S1 and the heated hose, which I don't have now. Gave me the info I needed to make sure there was no hitch when the time comes for the new machine in a couple of months.

I did switch mask this week, as the Swift FX pillows are never the same. Some are firm and work well, some are sloppy and work for a day or two. Went with the Nuance Pro and after one night, I am impressed. No leaks, quieter air port and a lot more comfortable on the head. She did say that Resmed is coming out with a new nasal mask within a month or so that should be a drastic improvement over the FX.

Thanks

I am a few months behind you too, Bob - it will be 5 years in April. Congratulations to making it this far.

I too went with a PR1 auto with heated hose. It is a nice system. Mind you I seem to be totally insensitive to the difference between my S8 elite and the PR1 auto.

Funny, I recognize all the names from that first year, when we all were newbies and trying glean as much info as we could. My actual date is 4/19, but I know to not wait till the last minute and expect to have a trouble free transaction with the DME and Medicare.......I have another question now, does the new PR S1 with a heated hose require a different power plug, or will me existing 12v power plug work? Thanks to all the class of 2009 for being there for all the current newbies and support for all the others in our class.

The power supply for the heated hose is different...larger (80 watts) if heated hose is used but the machines are supplied without heated hose often

And the little place on the back of the blower where you plug the cord in is a different size from what you are using.
So even without the heated hose attachment and heavier power supply....a different cord is needed to plug into the machine.

So your 50 series equipment and power supply won't work with the 60 series machine with exception of filters.

Thanks Pugsy, that was not the info I wanted to hear, with the price of new 12v cords. Guess I will have to start haunting eBay for the newer 12v power cord.
