Public Snoring

Post by VikingGnome » Sun Jan 05, 2014 3:42 pm

My nightly AHI has been less than 2.0 but over holidays I just didn't spend enough time in bed. Only 5-6 hours. I'm having EDS again. Today I had the ultimate humiliation. I fell asleep in church and somebody kindly woke me up because I was snoring loudly. I was so embarrassed. I quit most activities where I might snore in public like movie theaters, ballet, and symphony. I've slept many times in church but never snored, Good OSA demo.

I can imagine feeling pretty embarrassed too, Viking. If it helps, it could have been worse if you lived where I do: http://daviswiki.org/Snoring

Anyone snore in flight? I've had my seatmate nudge me to shut me up. I haven't tried using CPAP up in the clouds.

When flying I take a non drowse decongestant which wires me up and I knit non stop . After seeing my stats in ER there is no way I am going to fall asleep without my cpap.

I was on a flight last summer where a man fell asleep immediately after takeoff (it was only a 45 minute flight). Within a minute or so of falling asleep he started the pausing and gasping that is a common telltale sign of sleep apnea. He'd gasp himself awake every few minutes, then fall asleep again.

Personally, my most embarrassing snoring event took place about 8 months before I went in for a sleep study. I was in a hotel room, and the phone rang and woke me up around 2 am. It was an adjoining room telling me to stop snoring!

I tell you, having the CPAP machine keeping me from snoring is a wonderful thing. I do now wonder what would happen where I to fall asleep in an airplane seat. Would I start snoring loudly, or would sitting up in the seat keep me from making too many noises?

Fell asleep in class at college early 2013, instructor was going over something that I stayed to teach him the previous day (math) and I was coming down with the flu, zonked out and instructor had to come and physically shake me awake because I was snoring so loudly the rest of the class couldn't here him. This was about two weeks before my already scheduled sleep study due to me keeping wife awake via snoring.

I hope you don't think that cpap will stop storing all together. My snoring has woken me a few times over the years. The first time startled me because I thought those days were behind me.

in the past, I have passed up opportunities to go on trips with groups because of mandatory room-sharing. Ditto any long plane flights during which I'd have to sleep for at least part of the flight. I don't want to subject anyone to the snoring. Now with the CPAP machine I can at least do the room-sharing thing! My husband tells me that my snoring has nearly ceased, and what little there is, is quiet and short-lived.

Even as a young woman (and slim) I was told I snored. Just got worse through the years and with weight gain. I have found though that I can sleep upright without snoring if I carefully brace my neck so that my head cannot fall either forward or back. I nap regularly like this and my daughter says I don't snore. Neither do I wake with tell-tale signs of apnea events or have any apparent distress. However, if I fail to carefully brace my head and neck, I will have trouble. A shift of just a few inches makes a difference. I would suggest anyone wanting to know if this is an option for them to experiment at home with someone watching who will wake you at the first sign of it not working for you. Admittedly not very scientific and won't work for everyone.

At the time this was going on I don't recall there being any mention in all the news stories of the possible medical aspects of the case, other than the recognition that her snoring wasn't a "willful act." She did sue the city for what she went through, but I hope she also got the diagnosis and treatment she surely must have needed. The articles mentioned that part of her lawsuit was for medical expenses -- hopefully that included a cpap machine *smile*.

Honestly, if snoring is the "ultimate humiliation", you have lived a pretty good life! Snoring isn't something you can help. Lots of people do it, and it's not that big a deal.

Someone in this thread remarked that CPAP machines don't resolve all snoring. In fact, my horribly loud snoring is what lead me to get tested for Apnea. My experience is that a CPAP machine resolved some, but not all of my snoring. However, I switched to an APAP machine, and that pretty much wiped out the snoring.

I strongly disagree that it's not that big a deal. It is if it shows that you actually have sleep apnea. That "not big deal" can kill you when your body says enough of waking up to snort and recover from an apnea.

The treatment of snoring seems to be all about the pressure, and it is probably the availability of a higher pressure that enabled the machine to eliminate the snoring. I have a CPAP: I snored enough to wake myself when I first got the machine, but an increase in pressure (2 cm, doc ordered), fixed that. Now I get snoring "events" but they are only 1 second long. I don't know if those are a big deal or not. I need to check it out, when I have got my leaks under better control.

My dad was never obese , but I think he had sleep apnea. He could fall asleep anywhere, any time. He always attributed it to being a navigator in the airforce and having to catch a snooze where he could, but I think now he had apnea. He used to take me to the library every weekend, and I'd look for books while he sat and slept, head back, snoring loudly. And he was notorious for falling asleep during religious services and punctuating the sermon with his snores. He snored through tv shows, unless we dared to change the channel--then he'd wake and say "hey, I was watching that!"

This started happening to me in the last few years before CPAP. One of the things was that I would immediately fall asleep in the car if I wasn't driving. Sometimes I literally was asleep before my husband finished pulling out of our short driveway--and I could stay asleep until we reached our destination, even if it was hours away. My poor kid had to listen to me snore the whole way. I would fall asleep during movies, watching t.v., etc.

One of the most amazing things is that I can stay awake for entire car rides (not to say I always do). I don't fall asleep in movies or during religious services anymore.
