SD Card being erased and rewritten

Sounds like you found your problem, but it's been reported that Macs and Windows 8 machines will write data to the SD card whenever you insert it, and this screws up S9 cards.

I use both a MacBook Pro and a Windows 8.1 system with both ResScan and SleepyHead on both machines, and have no problems with my S9 card. I turn off the S9 before removing the card and I immediately slide the write-protect lever to protect the card. No problems with either machine now that I've got the new card reader.

Of course, it doesn't write to the card if you put the write protect switch to the lock position.

You would think that would solve it, but it doesn't. I have always put the switch in the locked position after taking it out of the machine, but my old reader still changed the card so that my S9 thought it needed to be erased and rewritten. My new one doesn't. Go figure.

I just read that the write-protect switch on the side of the sd card has no electrical function; it simply relies on the reader to detect the switch position. So if it is not detecting properly, it is your reader. This is quite likely what happened with my old reader.

Correct. The write protect tab only works a switch or sensor on the card reader. It doesn't do anything at all to the electronics on the card. If that switch on the card reader is broken, it doesn't protect anything. Also, if the card reader is sufficiently screwed up, it can simply zap the card, even if the machine never tries to write data to the card.

I had the same experience today. I downloaded my data without locking the card. When I put the card back in the machine, I got the erasing message. After reading this thread, I just removed an reinserted the card. That just gave me the Reading message. Lesson learned.
