Which Mask Does Your Partner Like?

Post by 95C4 » Mon Dec 23, 2013 1:53 pm

Lot of discussion on the Forum about finding the mask that 'works for me',, ie, in fit, comfort, stays on etc etc.

However, there is another factor if someone else shares your bed - & that is the noise from the mask disturbing them!!

I think the F&P 407 has done its dash as my wife departed for the spare room at 2 am complaining about the 'noise' from the mask.
Subsequent discussion established it appears to have been a jet engine whooshing noise from the mask exhale holes at 10 cm pressure.
She normally sleeps like a log, so it must have been fairly solid to have woken her, although it did not wake me.

Anyway, have a Wisp to try, but anyone have suggestions if that doesn't work??
ie, can suggest masks they use that allow someone to stay in the bed with them all night & that person, or cat or dog, says in the morning, 'that was wonderful, I didn't hear a thing all night!!! Stay with that one!!.

I guess I'm very fortunate that both my wife and I wear hearing aids in both ears and when taken out for bed she hears nothing from my mask and neither do I.

If you can find a mask that you are comfortable with AND your partner likes it...Great. What your partner likes is a non issue if you can't sleep with the mask. If your mask is exceptionally noisy...check for leaks or your exhaust may be blowing on a sheet or the pillow.

How do you find the Quattro for 'exhaust' noise??

There is lots of exhaust, but little noise. I try not to face my wife while sleeping or the exhaut bothers her.

I love the Aeiomed Headrest because the exhaust is up over both our heads... no blowing on my husband when we face each other, and it is pretty quiet.

Alas, the factory burned down, and it's no longer being made.

The Tap Pap is pretty quiet.

My wife likes any mask that I wear and is quiet. When I first started, she used to check to see if I was breathing - not sure she does anymore, but she does comment sometimes that it was noisy last night. If I ask it is usually that it was a little noisy, but then I turned on my side and it went quiet ... I currently use the TapPap, and getting good numbers with it, so I see no reason to change.

Here is what worked for us: After giving up on nasal pillows due to discomfort, I started with an FP Eson nasal mask. FP uses a small white disposable filter/diffuser and they use a little plastic guard that snaps on and holds it in place on top of the exhalation port. When I found the Eson was sticking too far into my eye sockets and causing headache and swelling eye problems, I switched to the Wisp with its more acute angle at the top of the cushion "triangle." But the cold "jet engine" blast from the exhalation port drove me and hubby nuts (as it had with the nasal pillows). So, I get the little oval exhalation "diffusers" made by FP for the Eson, split them into a half thickness and tape them in place over the exhalation vent holes on my Wisp, being sure not to block any of the Wisp exhalation holes. Works like a charm. People will come on here and say it is not safe and they are entitled to their opinion. I am not telling you do this since I cannot be there to be sure you don't cover over any of the holes with your tapr. But, with that reservation, it works great for me and I feel no back pressure from doing this at all. I use the half thickness just to be sure, after people warned me this was a bad idea. It seems to me that if it works for the Eson, it should work for the Wisp since they are very close in design and the pressures I've used are identical. I have not seen the FP PilairoQ or its "filters/diffusers" but believe the filters/diffusers on it are the same, Q being for "quiet." Good luck.

This is funny to me because I just started with cpap a week and a half ago. My hubby told me one day I can't sleep well anymore because I am so cold. I just cant seem to get warm. He couldn't figure out why. I laughed because I realized it was my exhaust blowing on him all night that made him cold.

For those experimenting with masks and having trouble with noise, consider this:

The exhaust is a lot louder if it hits something. My mask (Quattro fx) is very quiet, but if I aim my face downward, or the pillows or sheets get within a foot of the mask, I start hearing the noise of the exhaust. I have to readjust things a little to make the noise disappear. So, it is possible that you are dealing with the exhaust hitting something.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Between the bullfrog and I, we have 3 hearing aids.
As long as I sleep on my good ear, no one hears a thing.
I even slept through lightning striking a huge cottonwood in our yard.
(note: the tree survived)

My husband is pretty deaf, but lately he is not sleeping well because of a herniated disk. He does complain a bit about the "Darth Vader" effect of my mask, but when I offer to sleep without CPAP he backs down--before CPAP he was driven out to the couch most nights due to my snoring. ANYTHING is better than that.

I have turned the "flex" down on my machine to 1, and that has made it much quieter. I'd be happy to turn it off altogether, but I don't think it's possible.

It's in the clinician's menu on my PR S1. I turned it off a couple of years ago? My sleep doc told me to keep doing what I am doing. So I will keep tweaking as I see fit! Note, I said tweak. SleepyHead is a wonderful tool - thank you JediMark!
