1st time APAP user choosing between S8 and Respironics
I presently use a Respironics C-Flex CPAP with a setting of 15. I would like to switch to an auto machine since there is such positive feedback on APAP's. I am choosing between the Resmed S8 and the soon-to-be-released M series Respironics Auto.
I've read all the posts and it seems to come down to C-Flex. Should I even consider a non-C-Flex machine with a setting as high as 15? The S8 doesn't seem to have any kind of exhale relief in the auto mode, but yet s8 owners seem to love it.
I know that M series Auto has not been released, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Having only used one CPAP, I would like to better understand the critical points for consideration.
On a different subject, can one prescription be used multiple times?
Thank you.

Welcome orange-man. I currently use a Respironics M Series Plus and am trying to get my Dr./DME to get me an APAP as well. I'm not sure if C-Flex makes a difference at your pressure, but I'm finding out that it doesn't really make much of a difference for me at a pressure of 8. Alot of people swear up and down by it, but for me, I could probably do without it. I will take that into consideration when deciding which APAP to get when the time comes. Also, from what I've read, the S8 Vantage and the 420E seem to be the top ones. As far as the a prescription being used more than once, I'm going to guess probably not, but I haven't been cpap'ing it very long.
Orange-Man,

If you're ordering from an online DME it can be used multiple times.orange-man wrote:On a different subject, can one prescription be used multiple times?
This from the online supplier cpap.com:
Q. Will you accept my old prescription or do I need a new one?
A. Yes we will take your old prescription. Prescriptions do not expire.
Be aware that many insurance companies place limits on how old a prescription can be before allowing reimbursement. This is why companies who accept insurance as payment for CPAP equipment sometimes require a new prescription or letter of medical necessity from your doctor before providing you with equipment.
Tried the "new" m series with cflex and my pressure is at 14. My wife looked at me and stated that will not be staying in the same room. It was so loud, even when I turned off the CFLEX option. The air intake on this machine is a quarter of the size of the older model so I suspect that is the reason. I was lucky my supplier still had the older model REMstar Plus with C-Flex, what a great machine, although larger than the new M series it is so QUIET eveb at 14 pressure.

That's pretty simple to check. Turn you C-Flex off, at a pressure of 15 cm.orange-man wrote: I've read all the posts and it seems to come down to C-Flex. Should I even consider a non-C-Flex machine with a setting as high as 15?

What you will get is a ResMed APAP at 15 cm, the question is would you rather fight the pressure, or use a machine that provides relief in APAP. And remember ResMed is wanting to charge you 40% more for the same product in the future, out of the goodness of their hearts. Jim

I somehow imagine if Resmed charges more money so will Respironics and the rest of them. They would be foolishly loosing money otherwise. That's what price gouging is all about. "Them" (any company) and "Us" (the consumer).
You notice that healthcare in the U.S. costs so much? These machines are life saving and I don't expect them to be cheap but I can see where they might be making a killing compared to the cost of manufacturing each unit.

I have the same machine as you at a pressure of 16. When I first started, C-Flex seemed essential and I had it set at 3. After a while, I turned it down to 2. Lately, I've gone down to 1, also thinking about the S8, and find I'm having no problem.
I had a similar experience with Ramp, starting at 4, then 8, and now nothing--I just let her buck. I'm finding that, for me, those extras are less important as I have more time under the mask.
And by the way, cpapjack, I didn't find your boobytrap funny. I had to start over on a lengthy download I was doing in the background after you bounced me out of my browser. Thanks a lot!

Simple. It's the Silverlining software that PB machines use that made that happen. That software is my favorite.Rastaman wrote:RG likes her PB better than the Resmed and Respironics. I wonder how that happened?
I felt equally good after using any of the three major manufacturers' autopaps. My data results are different in some respects depending on which machine I use (even with same settings, same separate humidifier, same mask) but that's to be expected, imho. The important thing -- how rested I feel the next morning -- has been equally good with any of the three.
Each manufacturers' machines have had their own quirks that I had to tweak to suit me.
Far more important than the machine, imho... for most people it's the mask, the mask, the mask. The MASK is what we have to get comfortable enough to actually sleep with. And, of course, masks can need tweaking, too!
