Acid Reflux (Gerd) or any stomach sufferers?
I got some acid reflux here and there everyday but mainly if i lay down a while ONCE i get up and vertical i start burping and shortly after i hiccup to get the pressure of air back in my stomach, i don't understand it, Primary care doctor ignored me when i told him about it. I don't experience gas, just your casual fart once a while, A leak here and there ain't no Aerophagia.
ANyways, what should i do, i feel TUMS don't really do the trick.
Also go Low T and of course so kind of SDB.
AHI is 2.5 but that doesn't mean im feeling great

Raise the head of your bed 6- 8 inches. Gravity is powerful.

I agree...raise the head of your bed. If possible lay on your left side. Don't eat within 3 hours of bedtime. Tums will do nothing , try OTC Ranitidine for 14 days. Your primary care doctor is not doing his job if he ignores your concerns.BlackSpinner wrote:Raise the head of your bed 6- 8 inches. Gravity is powerful.

I've had Gurd, acid reflux and nervous stomach for over 25 years. You can try generic OTC Omeprazole, works good for me. It usually takes a day or so to get into the system. I used to be on a prescription from the Dr. and the cost shot up to well over $100 a month, so I switched to OTC. The generic will run about $25 for a 45 day supply at WalMart. You might need to take extra B vitamins as the drug depletes your body of the B family.

Take one Prilosec tablet once (only) daily and drink Metamucil.
Don't eat fatty food like French-fries.

Re: Acid Reflux (Gerd) or any stomach sufferers?
I have pretty severe GERD/Acid reflux, enough that I now have additional complication of Barrett's esophagus. I strongly recommend you see a gastrointestinal specialist for a proper diagnosis which usually includes having an endoscopy, if you haven't done so already. It's important to know the extent of the GERD to ensure proper treatment. You will probably be prescribed a protonic like the omeprazole, as previously mentioned. In my experience, relief with the meds only go so far....only with that and diet changes do I feel so much better. Had to say goodbye to most canned goods (acids used as preservatives are bad for us), all tomato products, citrus, fried foods, peppermints, any carbonated drinks and hello to decaffeinated coffee and tea. Good luck to you.
Question for CPAP veterans: I have read that sleep apnea can actually exacerbate GERD. Has anyone found this to be true...meaning that using CPAP treatment has actually helped?

My night time GERD just about went away the first night i used my cpap. Lately what has really helped with gas is not eating gluten.StatKat wrote: Question for CPAP veterans: I have read that sleep apnea can actually exacerbate GERD. Hey guys,
The very fact that I had GERD is the reason that my Rheumy ordered a sleep study. There must be some correlation.
CPAP does not seem to ease this issue either. I am not making any recommendations but my physician has me on Prilosec twice daily and Zantac twice daily. I haven't had a problem since.
Be well,
TheWino

Re: Acid Reflux (Gerd) or any stomach sufferers?
My doctor weaned me off Prilosec - 1/4 c celery juice first thing in the morning followed by 16 oz of water 10 min later. Took about 5 months of drinking celery juice every morning but now, no more meds. Like StatKat, had to change diet and eliminate caffeine. For the occasional acid reflux I just take 1 tsp apple cider vinegar and it's gone in an instant.StatKat wrote:Had to say goodbye to most canned goods (acids used as preservatives are bad for us), all tomato products, citrus, fried foods, peppermints, any carbonated drinks and hello to decaffeinated coffee and tea. Re: Acid Reflux (Gerd) or any stomach sufferers?
The pickle juice and vinegar posts hint at the alternative theory of reflux.
This theory basically says, the problem is not too much acid but too little. We should make 2 qts of stomach acid a day because that is what we need. It's all explained in a book called "Natural Alternatives to Nexium, Maalox, Tagamet, Prilosec & Other Acid Blockers: What to Use to Relieve Acid Reflux, Heartburn, and Gastric Ailments". The book has some weird parts like a chapter on candida yeast but it is pretty good overall.
The author claims that PPIs like Protonix and other acid reducers are not approved for long-term use and in fact reduce absorption of essential minerals which causes all kinds of long term problems.
I was taking more and more Protonix, and antacids. I started taking 2-3 Betaine hydrochloride tablets before each meal. Within a few weeks I was off all meds and have only occasional reflux. I take a DGL tablet instead of Tums when I need it.
Betaine hydrochloride and DGL are available in health food stores and online. I have never seen them in a mainstream pharmacy.
My GI doc will not even discuss these results. He just looks at me and shakes his head. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Acid Reflux (Gerd) or any stomach sufferers?
One of the causes of GERD can be a weak sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach which allows the stomach acid to flow up the oesophagus, right to the throat. Which is why people recommend raising the head of the bed.

Check out this book by a PhD scientist who cured his own case of gerd with a low carb diet.
http://www.amazon.com/Heartburn-Cured-L ... 817&sr=1-3
I purchased it when I erroneously thought I had it but never implemented it to see if it worked. If you're concerned that you have a medical condition that is contraindicated with a low carb diet, please check with your doctor.
Best of luck.

Re: Acid Reflux (Gerd) or any stomach sufferers?
J4900, see here how I got rid of my GERD 15 years ago:
I had GERD from 1975 when I was at age of 45 years old till about 1995 (at age of 65) when I started to go to the following Lab at UNC Medical School, Chapel Hill, NC. In between I been doing all the recommended instructions such as avoiding French fries and other fried food and also tilting the bed mattress to raise the head, etc., but did not drink that brine, vinegar, etc. See here how I have been lucky to treat my GERD the most up--to- date advanced methods. Since 1995 I have been undergoing routine, both lower and upper endoscopies at the UNC Lab.
My medications against GERD before doing my first Upper Endoscopy in 1999:

Students at the Chapel Hill medical school in, NC, should recognize the above hand writings, b/c by now this fellow is a full Professor in Gastroenterology over there.
Report of my Upper Endoscopy in 2011:

Notice in the report that I have Short -segment Barrett's disease {caused by the reflux from my stomach to my esophagus}. In this regard I am sort of lucky b/c if it was involved with Long- Segment cells then it would have been much more cancerous and I would had to repeat the upper endoscopy more often.
Last Rx, after 2011:

I take only one Prilosec tablet daily. Taking two tablets would not be good b/c it might reduce the stomach acid too much.
I don't have GERD any more. Even if I eat French fries twice a week with the premium McWrap from McDonalds.
Ten years ago I lost my good friend Joe Robertson (originally from West Virginia). Once the cancer from his esophagus spread it became a question of 2 years before he was gone. Nothing could be done about it. He did not pay attention to dealing with his GERD at any time until it was too late.
My next Upper Endoscopy is due at the beg of 2015.
