Quattro Air Revisited

Post by STL Mark » Sun Nov 24, 2013 11:58 am

I found after a period of time of using the Quattro Air my body had decided to eat the mask. My lower jaw would drop out of the bottom of the mask and I would wake up with the mask in my mouth. I have never been fond of chin straps and have attempted to make myself as comfortable as possible to encourage compliance. After several occurrences of this type i was ready to explore options.

My sizing of the mask cushion had recognized me at the lower end of a size medium mask. My previous use of the Mirage Quattro mask had determined I was exactly on the line between small and medium and I have used both. Realizing my insurance would pay for a cushion I contacted my DME and ordered a Quattro Air Large cushion. As many have noted the width remained unchanged however the mask was slightly taller. I sleep with a gap between my teeth approximately large enough to bite the knuckle on my index finger. Rather than going to sleep with a closed mouth i accepted that it would be open and put on the large mask. It has worked out wonderfully. The Quattro Air frame is identical for all mask sizes so a different size mask is accomplished my using a different cushion.

After several frustrating nights I would like to reaffirm my commitment to using the Quattro Air mask. If you are having similar problems I hope this will serve you.

Another thing that has helped me is to use a cervical collar. I know it sounds awful, and I was reluctant to try it, but it turns out to be surprisingly comfortable and it really works! I had developed TMJ from clenching my jaw closed at night to prevent the leaks, but now I'm on the mend. Another bonus to the cervical collar is that it keeps me warm as the temperature drops.

Mark...I have used the Quattro Medium for almost 4 years. Recently I decided to try the Quattro Air. I was given a Large and after 2 nights, I had to give it up. From my experience, the Air Large is narrower and shorter than the Quattro Medium.

I am thrilled that the Quattro Air is working for you

unfortunately, it's narrow profile seemed to feel like it was forcing my cheeks & lips to pucker all night. which then caused leaks after 3-4 hours of use.

I've had the same problem with FFMs, no matter what size I used. A pap-cap helped both the jaw-dropping problem and cheek puckering (chipmunk cheeks) problem for me.
