No matter what! rainout every night

Post by Ruinednose » Fri Nov 15, 2013 11:36 am

I tried putting towels and layers over the tubing and securing them with rubber bands. I also tried one night with humidifier on 3 and one night with 1. Still raining on me

What can I do. Bipap auto respirpnics M series

Wulfman...

Turn it to ZERO......OFF. If you have water in the tank, it'll still provide some humidity.

That's all I've ever used......"passover" mode.

You can try turning the humidifier off----you may be lucky and find out that your nose can tolerate very little humidity like Wulfman's. Or you may wake up in misery with dried out nasal mucosa (that's what happens whenever I turn my humidifier down below 4)

If you find out that you really cannot use the machine with a lower humidity setting or with the humidifier in passover mode (i.e. set to OFF, but with water in it), then about the only other things you can try are these:

1) Run the hose (in a hose cozy or the towels) under the covers and next to your warm body so that your body heat helps keep the air in the hose nice and warm

2) Opt for a stand alone third-part heated hose that works with any CPAP machine. One example of such a hose is the Hybernite heated hose system available from our host.

Ruinednose,

You say you are using a Resprionics M series, but your signature also says it's a one month rental.

That doesn't quite make sense: The M-Series is an obsolete model that was replaced back in 2009 or so by the first of the System Ones. I can't imagine any DME (even a sleezy one) setting somebody up with a one month rental of a 4+ year old machine.

Can you check your equipment just to make sure you've got it correct?? You may find my Newbie Guide to Respirionics Machines useful for making sure you have an accurate description of your equipment?

How is the hose positioned? Put your CPAP on a table or chair so that the top of the humidifier tank is just below the top of the mattress. Situate your hose so that any rainout that does occur will drip back into the humidifier tank instead of your schnozzle.

How much water is consumed every night? Full tank? Half tank?

The Series M machines are notorious for rainout, I can't believe anyone would rent them out anymore. If you need more humidity than at zero, you can buy a third party heated hose such as the Hybernite or if you do a search for reptile hose heater here on cpaptalk, you can make your own heated hose. I have both the Hybernite and my own reptile heater, I like them both. If you go with the Hybernite get the extra switch as the power supply does not have one and you will have to turn it on and off by the plug, most inconvenient.

Ditto on having the machine below the mattress. Also put a hook above your head on the wall or headboard ,support the hose with one or two girls hair scrunchy. The idea is to have the hose up over your head to the hook and back down to the machine ,this will drain the hose , if you need a hose extension you can buy a swivel coupler and 12-18 or 24 inch extension hose from cpap.com . . Turn your humidifier to off and just use passover mode. On down the road you can buy a hose hanger from amazon for like 12 bucks . Make a t shirt liner for your mask to wick away moisture from your breath. If all this doesn't work ,take the humidifier off and put the hose to the machine without the humidifier. Make sure your vent holes do not get blocked on your mask they remove your exhaust breath co2 and your wet breath-- check and clean these holes and do not bury you face in the pillows and blankets that would block them . put your face over the edge of the pillow to sleep. Get back here and report your findings please.

Thanks for the tips will definetly try. on a side note..

Last night was my 3rd night with the bipap. I feel more tired today then the last couple of days.
Last night i had the machine on for most of the night.

I woke up with it and with water in the hose and little water in the mask humidifier was on 2 i will turn it off tonight.

Basically im having less arousals then i used to but it seems like i am more tired during the day.
i sleep around 8 hrs a night.

My sleep study said i had only 1 apnea AHI and it was no longer then 20 secs. basically doctor made me do some blood work to check thyroid and testosteron as long as other things. i got swollen nasal membranes that im prescribed flonase for. during the night and when i wake up in the morning my nose is congested and i take off the mask to put a little bit of OTC nasal spray but im congested again in few hrs. Who knows how long i sleep with the mask with resistaance in my nose due to inflammation of sinus tissues.

Doctor thinks i got UARS upper airway resistance. Im typically a nose breather but its hard to lately even doring the day due to nasal congestion form the inflammed tissues.

Part2.

In february of this year i had this problem with sleeping and feeling not regenerated in the day and waking up a few times at night and in the morning wake up earlier then normal and very hard to go back to sleep. after a month of this is went away naturally and everything was normal. This time same experience its just not going away. its been going on for 2 months now.

I wanna get rested. What should i do?

The M series machines don't have humidity sensors at all. There is no "auto" function for humidity on the M series (and older) machines. Humidity delivered was strictly by heat to the water.
Rain out is just something that happens when all the conditions are just "right" for condensation to occur. It's extremely unlikely that the humidifier is overheating because if it did the tank would go dry and stink something awful.
Prior to the PR System One 50 series machines with the sensors in the machine to measure ambient room humidity and try to adjust the humidity delivery....we had heat only machines and rain out was quite common...in summer or winter if the conditions were just right.

Rain out can even occur if a humidifier is not even attached...our own exhaled breath contains moisture and it will condense in the mask if conditions are just right. Happens more often in the winter because bedroom temperatures (one of those conditions that needs to be just right) are cooler and makes for air in the mask to cool and allow the air to release the moisture it is holding.

Even a heated hose on highest temperature doesn't necessarily stop all rain out if it is coming from the moisture in our exhaled breath that is condensing in the mask itself and the conditions (usually temperature) in the room are cool enough.

Edit: The above was in response to a reply stating that the M series machines had sensors...they don't.
Apparently that post was removed just as I was posting this reply. I will still leave this comment for future reference about the M series and older machines. I know about M series machines...I used one for 2 years till I got my first PR S1 machine.

I had an older resmed that would hiss and spit water all night. I was non-compliant because of it and then had surgery. Now back on a new system one cflex+ and would sleep without it. Insist that they try you on a system one with a humidifier and with a heated tube.

I had a similar machine for many years, and I used a heavy weight insulated hose cover from one of the on-line suppliers. It is made of material like an insulated jacket, two layers of nylon filled with a fiberfill insulation. I always use a rather high setting on my humidifier, and use about 10-12 ounces of water in a 7 hour night.I have my hose cover running the full length from the water chamber to the face of my mask, and I snug down each hose end with a rubber band. With this setup, I never get rainout, and I use the same machine setting year round.
