Dry mouth with max humidification

Post by lyankowy » Tue Nov 05, 2013 11:27 am

Machine: System One 60 Series
Mask: Full Face

Why is my mouth bone dry when I wake up? The humidifier is set to max levels and I hydrate a LOT before bed.

HELP!

In my opinion, that's probably why. Too much heated humidity CAN contribute to nasal congestion which forces the user to breathe through their mouth.......the result is "dry mouth".

Try turning your humidifier setting down or Off and see if that helps. If you're not, try doing nasal cleansing before bedtime to make sure you can breathe through your nose.

You're probably mouth breathing when you're sleeping. It doesn't matter how much humidification you're getting, if you're breathing through your mouth, it will dry out.

I think that it is likely that a lack of vitamin D this time of year increases the breathing instability from the pressure of xPAP, we tend to over breath, and if the blood chemistry changes of this do not dry us up the stuffed up airway from this will inspire mouth breathing which will.

You might do well to have your vitamin D levels checked.

Those who are working with the D3 hormone (A.K.A. Vitamin D3) (e.g. Dr. Stasha Gominak, Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., Vitamin D Council) seem to be finding that the very low side of the “normal” range of 30-100 ng/L produces a range of symptoms including OSA, pain, and infection. All believe that a level lower than 50 ng/mL is not good and Dr. Stasha Gominak recommends 60-80 ng/mL for good health.

Dry Mouth and how to help it when wearing a mask
by Guest on Fri Nov 08, 2013 8:42 pm
You can get a product called "Biotene" at Walgreens that is made for dry mouth. My mouth feels so dry when I wake up sometimes and I get up and put a small amount of that in my mouth. You can NOT SWALLOW this. You swish in your mouth and then spit out. So you could put this on your night stand alone with a glass to spit it out in. It makes a tremendous difference and works good. For another solution I use that keeps me from having to leave my bed. I purchased a small spray bottle. It is about the circumference of about 2" around. It is about 6" tall and especially important it has a spray top that has the end that turns to "off". That is extremely important. This goes to bed with me under the blankets. I sleep alone so I can put it under the extra pillow. This keeps it warm. If you room is cold and water gets cold than that will wake you up so warm is better. I suppose you could lay it on your night stand and put something over it to keep it warm. When I wake up with a dry mouth, I turn the spray top and spray it into my mouth. You can spray it different directions in your mouth and not even have to sit up in bed. Just put your lips around the nozzle so it doesn't run out. When done, turn the nozzle to "off" so it doesn't leak in bed. Works "Great".
My mask rides low on my lip and sometimes actually goes down onto my lower lip and I really don't think I could open my mouth to breath without difficultly because mask would be in the way. Hopes this info helps you.

I am only using a 2 on my heated humidifier.

Forgot to mention that I take vit. D supplements of 2000 mg per day so I don't believe that vit. D does anything. My dentist told me that saliva in the mouth is extremely important to prevent cavities. Dry mouth she said is common for mask users and you will have to pay particular attention to your teeth to protect them so try your best to do something at night to try to keep them moist.

Tape it to your face so the minor discomfort that comes from the tape pulling on your skin will hopefully wake you up enough to stop the unwanted behavior.
It is common. Lots of newbies do it at first and even on occasion cpap veterans will do it.
Tape over the straps just a little...that's what I would do before trying to wear mittens to bed.
Eventually the brain learns to accept the alien stuck on your face and will quit trying to get rid of it but it takes time.
