Homeless W/Severe Sleep Apnea
Re: Homeless W/Severe Sleep Apnea
[quote="Todzo"]I think the reason this thread receives an average of some 400+ views a day now entering the third week is simply that the well documented executive dysfunction[1] that comes with OSA hinders those with OSA in a way that could indeed bring them to the homeless situation. They know inside that they are indeed “at risk”.
Todzo... I think the reason this thread receives an "average of some 400+ views a day" is because people want to see what you are going to come up with next. Do you really think that most of us are the least bit interested in executive dysfunction or becoming homeless as a result of it? Out of the 400+views a day, how many do you think actually care about this problem?
We are adults here... quite a few of us are over sixty... do you really think we are "at risk" or even give a s**t about this? I do not. I doubt the younger crowd does either.
Do you enjoy the responses you get to the majority of your posts?

OSA is affecting many more of our children, our youth, our young men, and those of middle age than you may realize!!!! You bet they care!!!!!!!!!ems wrote:Todzo wrote:I think the reason this thread receives an average of some 400+ views a day now entering the third week is simply that the well documented executive dysfunction[1] that comes with OSA hinders those with OSA in a way that could indeed bring them to the homeless situation. IMO that seems to be quite contradictory when you think about it.Todzo wrote:OSA is affecting many more of our children, our youth, our young men, and those of middle age than you may realize!!!! You bet they care!!!!!!!!!
Assuming you don't have ED, of course.

perhaps if your executive functioning had been working better you would have been able to "inhibit the prepotent response"[1]Stormynights wrote: The devil made me do it.

Re: Homeless W/Severe Sleep Apnea
Weeks of sniping at each other. Let this thread DIE.
My final opinion: Jos had a lot of fun making people think he was in dire need of help. Not once did he tell us what his AHI was in sleep study. He didn't tell us what size mask he needed. He didn't state what pressure he needed to treat his sleep disorder. He did not say he had a doctor's prescription for a CPAP. He believed he could run a CPAP with humidifier in the dead of winter and not have the water freeze or vapor in the hose freeze up.
His "nest" was an inoperable vehicle but he has a power generator and solar panel. For what? He buys gas for the generator? He never answered where he got his food or water. How does he keep water and food from freezing in winter? Does he ever take a shower? He never admitted to staying at a homeless shelter. Does he only have the clothes on his back? How does he do laundry? He doesn't have access to a restroom so he walks barefooted in the snow to relieve himself. Is the area around his "nest" covered with human feces as well? What about city/county ordinances? He was having trouble getting even a minimum wage job. If he was dirty, strong BO, unshaven, unkempt and barefooted, nobody would hire him like that.
He stated he lost his wife and kids and his home about 10 years ago. I asked if he had any relatives to stay with for a while. He never answered. I would think his grown children would be involved in his life if this all happened within the last decade. What about siblings? Nieces/Nephews. Everybody has somebody that would care if allowed to care. Said he collected cans to pay for his post office box. Do you realize how many aluminum cans he would have to acquire to pay for an annual PO box rental? It takes a huge amount as they get a penny a can. Now if he said he collected copper wire, he'd be more in the ballpark.
The homeless around here don't go to the public library. They have working unactivated cell phones and hang out at McD or other place where there is free WiFi to login to free email account. They bunker down under interstate overpasses even though there are several homeless shelters in town. They panhandle on street corner with signs like "hungry veteran. Please help" (We have a VA hospital in town.) Ten years ago I collected teeny beanies from McD Happy Meals. McD wouldn't let you pay and then just take the toy. So I had 10 happy meals and a block away was a "starving" homeless man. I offered him my 10 Happy Meals (hamburgers, chicken nuggets and fries) and he spit on my car windshield. He wanted CASH so he could go buy liquor.
I don't think Jos was homeless. I don't even believe he was writing from Michigan. As I previously pointed out, 100 miles north of Grand Rapids places him in Lake Michigan. I don't think he was trying to mooch. He was a prankster/troll. When his story became totally unbelievable, he got all holy and religious.
In general, most homeless people are not criminals. They may get misdemeanor trespassing and loitering tickets. They might have fist fights when intoxicated. Most have friends that are also homeless. They stay together in "homeless camps" and everybody knows everybody else's first name and they watch out for each other. They may even share cigarettes/food/alcohol with each other. It is VERY unusual to find a homeless loner. They just can't survive alone. They need others to get what they need.

OSA is known to cause executive dysfunction[1] hence the sniping ...VikingGnome wrote:Weeks of sniping at each other. ... Jos...
Anyone who compares what you wrote with what jos actually wrote will note many discrepancies …

Re: Homeless W/Severe Sleep Apnea
Actually, that would place him in Cadillac (one of a few Easter eggs in his threads)(that one being the irony of "homeless in (a) Cadillac")(obviously his present abode)(also because 2000 Cadillacs (he bought it new in 2000) were renown for heater problems (although the issue was/is electrical connection problems, and it sure seems like Hobo Joe, with his 23 years of hi-tech electrical experience would have found and fixed that in a jiffy). So while he is clever, not THAT clever...VikingGnome wrote:As I previously pointed out, 100 miles north of Grand Rapids places him in Lake Michigan.
BTW, more likely he is living about 100 miles west of Grand Rapids (which now does put him in Lake Michigan, interestingly, living on the classic Great Lakes shipwreck...

Re: Homeless W/Severe Sleep Apnea
One of the men who I lent my pulse oximiter to in shelter, who had serious desaturations during sleep considering the results of that oximeter, has a story that may shed light on how OSA affects relationships, marriages, and lives.
He worked for a major company in our city (top 20s radio market – a big one) and even while in our “transitional living” facilities he still had a lot of “stuff” (things, tools, mostly in boxes) in his room and apparently some in storage.
You could almost count on him “going off” on some silly thing on the TV every Saturday night. The TV room (we had one on each of the three floors) would kind of empty out during that time. Once in a while he would get into a verbal spat with someone during that time.
What caused his homelessness could well be related to the executive dysfunction caused by Sleep Apnea. One of the components of executive function is:
INHIBITION of dominant or prepotent responses.
In my own experience I actually found myself shouting at a work mate during service in front of customers. A supervisor told me “you are out of control”. Thinking about it as confronted by him and noting that we were near the end of the day I requested his permission to leave early. He granted my request. I dodged a bullet.
In his case he assaulted his wife. Prison time. Loss of the good long term job.
Sleep Apnea Affects Lives!!!!
