How to identify S9?

Post by acabgd » Mon Nov 04, 2013 8:45 pm

Hello,
I have a chance to get a used ResMed S9, but the seller doesn't know anything about it - model, year of manufacture, hours used... The deail is simply too good to miss, so I'm going to see the guy and the machine, hopefully being able to identify which model of S9 he's selling.

Could anyone point me at what I should look for exactly? I know there is a sticker in the back, but I don't know the difference between models and their stickers. What is the key combo to get the hours used - and what is the "acceptable" number of hours at all?

Thanks,
Alex

Model name is clearly stated on the blower unit right above the on/off button.
Provider manual here explains how to get to the clinical menu to check run hours.

Acceptable hours varies on price asked and what else may come with it.

I forget the coding on the stickers on the back...maybe someone else can explain it. It's isn't as straight forward as the manufacture date sticker on the PR System One machines.

With the S9, you want an AUTO or an ELITE model. An ESCAPE or ESCAPE AUTO will not give you the data you need to adjust your therapy.

Be sure you get the blower unit, the humidifier, a water tank, and the power supply. Most sellers have hoses and masks as well. You might ask if the seller doesn't offer them at first. Masks are iffy. They may not be the type you need, or may not be your size.

I've bought the S9 AutoSet used for $300 and $250, and considered both to be good deals.

An S9 Elite or AutoSet is much preferable to an Escape or Escape Auto. The Elite or AutoSet records a lot of data that can help you if you have problems. It will also tell you how well your therapy is working, etc.

There is no S9 "AUTO". There are AutoSet and Escape Auto. You want AutoSet, and you should run away if it's an ESCAPE Auto.

Please note I'm from Europe, I don't know if the models differ in names here, and if the one that the seller has comes from Europe or not.

He doesn't have a humidifier, but I can get that from US sellers new for an acceptable low fee. This unit comes with the power adapter and the SD card, that's all. No hose, mask or anything else. Price is 200 euro, so around $270.

The other unit I could get is the TYCO/Puritan Bennett auto Cpap and comes with full package, including the mask, hose, etc.

With the S8 series there were slight differences in model names of the machines manufactured for use in Europe but I don't know if they continued that practice with the S9 series.

this link is for the UK ResMed and it appears that the names are the same.
If you are in a different country you can go to the extreme top of the page and change location.

The Clinician manual I linked to above works on all the S9 machines as far as the secret code for getting into the machines.

I got to see the machine, it says "Elite". Is this a good model to get?

Yes, the S9 Elite is a good machine. It is a full data machine and you can use SleepyHead software to get the reports or use ResScan.

It is a fixed single pressure machine (except for the EPR exhale relief choices) and it won't auto adjust the pressure like the AutoSet does.
It has a single mode of operation...cpap mode. Nothing wrong with it and in fact a lot of people prefer that mode of operation.
It might take just a tiny bit longer to find an optimal pressure doing one pressure setting at a time and not having the machine auto adjust but it really isn't horribly difficult to do.

I think some of the more complicated machines, such as the bilevel ST/T mode and ASV machines may have different names overseas. In particular, I think there's an "AutoSet CS" that is the same or similar to the US VPAP Adapt.
