Newbie on forum. Want info on ResMed S8 Elite II.

Post by dannah00 » Wed Oct 30, 2013 3:01 pm

I'm new here and am still struggling with the search function a bit. I've been told that there is a ton of info on here about the S8 Elite II but I am apparently not searching correctly. I would like info on the AHI/HI on this machine which reads much higher on this machine than the loaner Respironics I used for a few weeks. There are no local DME's (within 90 miles) which have capabilities to read the data on my machine and the one that is 90 miles away will charge $15 for every download. I would rather purchase a data card and card reader and download myself but am confused about other info I found online referring to S8 data cards and smart media cards (are they the same thing?). I am really trying to get a handle on my health and am struggling with fatigue, sleepiness and headaches which my doctor is chalking up to improper cpap therapy. Not sure what else to do and I understand it might take a lot longer than I originally anticipated.

If any one can link me to some of these answers or teach me how to search more effectively, I would appreciate it!

Welcome Danna, try this in the search box: +Resmed +s8** +elite and you'll get some 55 matches. Note the asterisks. Our search function needs at least 4 characters.

As for you higher AHI, the S8 is generally acknowledged to aggressively score hypopneas. Some suggest that it scores at twice the rate of other machines.

Jay

It is really hard to find a card reader for this machine and expensive. The card is a unique size that requires a very specific reader.

Did you get it used? It is a good machine but a few years old, not the current model. I hope you didn't get it from a DME who passed it off as the current model. They are worth $150-250 approx.

You can get card reader on eBay but you won't get as much data as the S9 offers. This is the card reader: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Resmed-ResScan- ... 3cd77016e5

As was said above, you can pretty much cut the HI part of the AHI in half.

Thanks for all the help!

I was diagnosed with OSA almost 5 years ago which is when I was set up with the S8. I have since moved and there are no local DMEs that deal with ResMed, only Respironics. I would prefer to not have to buy a new machine as long as mine works but I am realizing how difficult it is to find a reasonably priced card reader for this machine. If I don't have any luck getting the data myself, I may have to get a new machine, but financially I would rather not.

I have never seen the card reader available for less than $70. Some people wouldn't want to spend that since the S8 didn't offer waveform data like the S9. You can still get all the basic AHI and leak data onscreen.

I am with you on this one. I would rather put the money for the card reader (and in this case this person also needs the Smart card) toward a newer machine.

About the only benefit I can think of using the software with the S8 Elite is to look for clustering or patterns to the events which might point to maybe supine sleeping or REM stage sleep but the fix is still the same..most likely just a little more pressure.
Leak line might show something but if the leak number on the machine is within acceptable limits...it's unlikely that leaks are an issue and the leak graph probably won't show anything exciting.

Look up forum members who sell "second hand " or reconditioned equipment. Like STLMark. I have bought from them.
At the age your machine is i would be looking for a back up NOW. In fact I did. My S8 is now my back up and travel machine. Don't buy from you local DME they charge twice as much as an online dealer. They are easy to set up, someone here will hold you hand through it if need be.

Welcome! My S8 is my backup and travel machine. I love my S9! It gives you the daily stats right out on the LCD readout screen and the Sleepyhead software reads the SD card. You might want to upgrade soon,
