Husband Sleeps with Mouth Open

Post by Canadian Gal » Sat Sep 21, 2013 8:02 am

My husband recently suffered a major heart attack. The Window Maker. Since then he has lost 40 lbs and is down to his ultimate weight for height and age. Prior to the heart attack he snored like a freight train. After the heart attack he stopped snoring immediately, even before any weight loss. He had a sleep apnea test done and he was borderline. They didn't recommend doing anything at this time. As the months have progressed and he has lost the weight, he rarely snores; however, he sleeps with his mouth completely open and breathes very loud. I can hear him from one room over at night. Does this indicate that his sleep apnea has gotten worse?

I would think his doctors would take sleep apnea more seriously, after a heart attack. They did after mine, I'd have the doctor do a overnite pulse ox at home and see what the readings are.

If it was my health in question and I showed borderline, i'd run for the border and get and use a APAP with the software so I could maybe prevent the next heart attack. Losing weight if great but living without problems brought on by untreated sleep apnea is even better. Jim

as a fellow cardiac patient, it sounds to me like his sleep breathing should be investigated further. is he tired in the daytime or does he wake up refreshed and have energy all day? does he take naps? the oximetry home test goofproof suggested sounds like a good idea: also do you go to his appointments with him? the doctor may not be aware that he is doing this in his sleep. has he seen a sleep doc at all, or just a cardiologist, or god forbid, just a family practitioner?

you may want to video record him and take it back to the doctor too, if camera available, etc.
