Let's go right to the point: Is it OBSTRUCTIVE APNEA REAL? answer: YES. Is APNEA bad for you? answer: NO. In fact, 'central apneas' are present in healthy subjects in their sound sleep every single night. Shallow breathing? YES! That too! By now you may think that I'm either crazy or trying to confuse you. Believe me! That's the last thing in my mind. Allow me to show you a few facts... FACTS! so you judge by yourselves:
DID YOU KNOW THAT....
Alphawaves, sorry but you are dead wrong about the medical community exploiting fears about cholesterol. You see, I know a thing or two about cholesterol and medical treatment as I have been treated, sometimes in medical studies, for high cholesterol for 33 years now. I have read extensively on the subject. Liver disease is NOT common for people treated for high cholesterol. You assert all this with no factual references.

As far as apneas being "not bad for you," you again provide no factual references. You do make some interesting statements, but I can't treat them as more than that. Have you read about the stages of acceptance in CPAP treatment posted at the top of this board? Is it possible that you may be in denial about your apnea? I think its quite possible.

I'll continue to take my Cholesterol meds, in hope of keeping my stents open, despite it not being proven that high Cholesterol causes heart blockages.

I'll also use my XPAP to help keep my O2 levels up while sleeping. It's your choice how you decide to live. I wont be paddleing in De-Nile! Jim

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing; and now we have an idea how very, very little it takes.

I googled this because I must admit I was a little concerned. I found NOTHING saying that liver disease and being treated for high cholesterol have anything in common. Such junk.

Alphawaves,

I am a big time skeptic of mainstream medicine.

But there is no doubt in my mind that apnea is real and can destroy your health big time. To advocate otherwise without definite proof is dangerous in my opinion.

And please stop posting quotes in big red/blue letters - just makes it harder to look at. If it's here and in quotes it'll be read - no need to emphasize!

OK, I'm a newbie. And I'm confused here. I'm a firm believer that a lot of the hype surrounding fat consumption and lipids in general is bunk, and yes, it is to a large extent self-serving to the mainstream medical community. I get that.

But I was under the strong impression that the dangers of sleep apnea and the benefits of therapy as we know it were well established and subject to no dispute, even from traditional naysayers like me.

Could I have taken a wrong turn here somehow?

Of course not. Just because some character shows up out of nowhere one day with some noise is not a reason to throw out the baby. You're always free to check out the latest research of course, but until you see an actual consensus of knowledge by legitimate and respected researchers (not just some alternative med site) just keep doing what has worked for you and the huge majority of the rest of us for a long time.

Especially, ignore the sad, misguided souls riding on their little barges down that great waterway of De-Nile.
At their destination, there will be salt water aplenty, but not from the Mediterranean, but from the tears of their loved ones.
