I replied to that thread ... registered for the privilege!

I expect to be banned in record time.

It is called an "ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Group" in the "ASAA A.W.A.K.E. Network." ( http://www.sleepapnea.org/support/here- ... ators.html )

Each group has a coordinator who is supposed to pay $75 for a book of guidelines that explain, among other things, "legal issues." I assume those issues would include warnings about not giving medical advice or contradicting medical advice already given by doctors and RTs. (http://www.sleepapnea.org/support/here- ... order.html )

Interestingly, though, Mike over at sleepguide.com has been an advocate for patients' adjusting pressures even though he is a lawyer AND an A.W.A.K.E. group coordinator. ( http://www.sleepguide.com/profile/MichaelG )

I have enjoyed every A.W.A.K.E. meeting I've ever attended, including one where the ASAA's Mr. G. himself spoke.

But I don't think Carbonman had a good experience when he went, if I remember correctly.

I wonder if he's been biking in scuba gear out there?

Sorry. Random thought.

I was once a memeber of Carbonman's throng of angry villagers storming the gates of the CPAP cartel, until I hurt myself on one of the rakes and pitchforks.

Daniel.

You guys really need to harden up, you should know that people who are as sleep deprived as Jedimark, are going to come across as agressive, how about cutting him some slack? He has done more for the sleep Apnea community than anyone on this forum

I guess I will be banned as well, because I've had the audacity to disagree with the faceless men & women on this forum that call themselves moderators

You shouldn't have used the phrase "harden up," probably.

Hi Stu -- I admit that it was tempting to take the bait, but for now I don't plan to. First of all, Daniel's question is not really a question (nor is he confused as he claims ) -- he knows why I wanted the ASAA to see what I bolded in my doctor's email. So I perceived his question as an attempt to provoke -- as in, the sooner the thread turns heated, the sooner they can call "offensive post" and shut the discussion down, lock the thread, ban the poster, etc. That wasn't my goal. I decided that my goal in posting was to simply point out that some sleep medicine doctors are starting to respect their patients' ability to responsibly manage their cpap therapy. That's it. I met my goal.

It's clear that protesting the ASAA forum guidelines on the ASAA forum is an exercise in futility. As some here have pointed out, and I agree, it's their forum, they've made the rules, and they really believe that they are doing good work. I wish that an organization with their stature had a more enlightened position at this point but I have zero control over that, at least as far as using their forum is concerned.

So we'll see what happens. I wondered, if the discussion stays civil and respectful, how long they might let it go on before they feel the need to lock the thread down.

Just curious; do they have much traffic on their forum?
It doesn't seem as busy as here--of course, I kind of dig chaos.

I don't know the answer. I might be willing to host a forum though.
I also like the idea ... but we happen to have a great group here, and I am not in a rush to leave it.
Hi Kevin -- I wouldn't want to leave this group either. I didn't think of the idea of a patient-founded organization as being in any way incompatible with -- or necessarily even separate from -- this forum. Perhaps cpaptalk would be the official patient support forum for a patient-run sleep apnea organization. Just a thought.

+1

The nice thing about this group ("cpaptalkers," if you will) is that, unlike traditionally organized and funded groups, no one is in charge to set the agenda.

I consider my purchases at our host's commercial website, cpap.com, to be my doing my personal part to fund cpaptalk.com. That is nothing more than my personal view, though. Not a suggestion from the management, as far as I know.

But in my view, every time one of us makes a warm, welcoming, helpful post to someone who has come here for help (no matter how grouchy or antagonistic or disrespectful of so-called unwritten forum protocol, real or imagined, he or she may seem), I see that as our doing our part to be a cog in the larger patient-organized machine of informal next-door-neighbor helpfulness that comes with being a useful, productive member of the human race.

I think that may be part of what Dave was getting at in his comments about unfunded deeper motivation: "God's work."

Failing to do "God's work"; wouldn't that be considered sinful?
--or at least contrary to our better urges?
Faith, or even agnostic altruism, expects no less of decent humans.
