That is what I thought about. Mollette likes being a bit tricky.

For the rice or for the masks?

The masks. We'd better leave the rice where it is, if we put it in a single pile, the axis of the earth would shift.

BTW, that 9 veggiezillon is only the last payment. Adding in the other 63 would double that.

Oh, darn!

And I had a whole bunch of great rice recipes, too.

That aspect of the offer popped into my head right away. It's like a lot of early math posers involving 1 penny on the 1st of the month, and doubling the value each day. By the time you reach day 31, you're talking 10.7 billion (U.S. billions). Carry that out to 64 days and there isn't enough "money" on earth to cover the bill.

OK, I'll make you a deal!

I'll give you a Pilairo for only 10,000 metric tons of rice (I imagine from a practical point of view, I don't believe I'm patient enough to wait the 1000 years to grow the 9 skootillion tons).

It is a bit surprising that some people have never heard of this or contribute it to the wrong origin. Way back when I was coming along all the school kids knew it and if you did not know it you were sure to get conned.

The earliest written record of this story is about 1,000 CE. Here is part of the Wikipedia entry:
here are different stories about the invention of chess. One of them includes the geometric progression problem. Its earliest written record is contained in the Shahnameh, an epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE.

When the creator of the game of chess (in some tellings an ancient Indian mathematician, in others a legendary dravida vellalar named Sessa or Sissa) showed his invention to the ruler of the country, the ruler was so pleased that he gave the inventor the right to name his prize for the invention. The man, who was very wise, asked the king this: that for the first square of the chess board, he would receive one grain of wheat (in some tellings, rice), two for the second one, four on the third one, and so forth, doubling the amount each time. The ruler, arithmetically unaware, quickly accepted the inventor's offer, even getting offended by his perceived notion that the inventor was asking for such a low price, and ordered the treasurer to count and hand over the wheat to the inventor. However, when the treasurer took more than a week to calculate the amount of wheat, the ruler asked him for a reason for his tardiness. The treasurer then gave him the result of the calculation, and explained that it would take more than all the assets of the kingdom to give the inventor the reward. The story ends with the inventor becoming the new king. (In other variations of the story the king punishes the inventor.)

Great pic for this one!

Sorry gang, but you triggered a calculator freak here, a fairly regular poster at mohpc.com (museum of HP calculators). Not far gone enough to go to their annual meeting yet, but enough to seriously contemplate it - check hotels, airfare... you know.

A few quick calculations, estimating 2.5m diameter x 10m tanks, 4 cubic mm per grain, and 50 foot trucks, we need enough trucks (156 billion) to circle the globe 61.7 MILLION times. Hope the rice doesn't come postage due! And don't forget the cost of diesel over the 3 million years it takes to unload the trucks at 10 minutes each. But I figure there is a good side to it all! 3 million years of zero% unemployment over the entire planet -and that only covers the truck drivers!
