First Night on CPAP

Post by elessadil » Sun Sep 08, 2013 1:30 pm

Had my first night last night and it didn't go too badly even though I didn't get to sit and get used to it for a few hours as I had planned. Had to take my mother to the hospital last night and didn't get home until midnight. I had some problem with mask leaking. Sleeping on my side is mostly OK, but occasionally it leaks from the top as it pulls out of my nose. The minute I turn on my back the weight of the hose pulls down on the mask and it starts to leak pretty bad as the pillows pull out of my nose. I woke up every time this happened, so gotta fix this problem, and just grabbed the hose where it connects to the mask and just pushed it up. I tried tightening the headgear but that didn't work, just made my ears sore. I think part of the problem is the pillows are too big. I ordered the small, but it seems I need the x-small. I like the Bella loops headgear, but will order the x-small pillows and I think I will also order the regular swift fx headgear as well and see if that makes any difference to the seal. I like the nasal pillows and minimal headgear.

I had the humdifier set on 4, but my nose was pretty dry this morning so I think I will have to bump the humidity up to 5. I also have a bit of congestion, but I think a higher humidity setting might take care of that I also have the hose buddy and it's great. Kept the hose well managed.

Here are my results from last night: I think they are pretty good

That looks amazing for a first night not to mention the stress you had to be under. I hope everything goes well for both you and your Mother.

Your hose problems will be solve with a hose management system. I use the Hose Buddy, but do a search. There are many folks here that have devised their own contraptions. It will get the hose out of the way... trust me...

I think you'll like the Swift FX, it's a popular favorite among nasal pillow users (including myself). Although it seems counter-intuitive, sometimes loosening the headgear will produce a better seal, not to mention it's more comfortable. I drape my hose over the top of my headboard, so that it's suspended over me and the weight pulling on the mask is reduced.

Don't get discouraged if it takes some time to get things just right. Before you know it, this all will be second nature to you and the results will be more than worth the effort.

I have the hose buddy and use it, it sure helps. Still had trouble with leaks last night as the mask was pulling out of my nose. Once I got the whole thing sitting right, took about 1/2 hour, I dropped off to sleep and slept for 5 hours until I rolled over on my back and out popped the mask and woke me up. Even little leaks seem to bother me and I can't fall asleep until I get rid of them, but that could be just because I am not yet used to sleeping with an alien on my face. Took me another 1/2 hour to get it sorted out and then back to sleep until 6:20 this morning. Wow!!! Even with the wake up around 2 am because of the leak I still feel better this morning. I have forgotten what it feels like to have a good night's sleep. Once I get the leak problem worked out I think I will have some awesome nights of sleep!!
I also bumped up the humidity to 5.5 and this morning my nose feels much better. Yesterday it felt like the Sahara Desert!!!
