How to convince the doctor to prescribe S9 Autoset?
I'm sorry if this post seems contradictory to my previous post (about not using prescription to buy a used CPAP). Turns out secondwindcpap.com also needs a prescription, so I need to go get one from my doctor. I want to get S9 Autoset because a lot of people use it and love it (not to mention the full-data capabilities). Thing is I've been using S8 Elite II without auto-pap function, and I am concerned that the doctor will not prescribe an auto-pap for some BS reasons (like "you don't need auto pap" or "APAP is inefficient" blah blah). What are good reasoning to use with the doctor to convince him to prescribe an APAP? Also, what kind of information is usually written on a prescription? Is it possible to get something like "CPAP of a patient's choice written"?
Thank you very much for any responses. I know some of my posts are kinda trivial and totally noob, but I'm really new to all this and want to get the best for my treatment! Thanks

A generic "cpap" prescription will work for any cpap or Apap if purchased online.
YOU are the customer; YOU order what you need.
I bought my S9 Autoset from cpap.com with a generic RX.
Specific model is mainly needed to get what you need from a greedy local DME.

FYI I saw the ad on SecondWindCpap for the autoset and just wanted to let you know that our forum host, CPAP.com recently advertised NEW Autosets for less than listed at SecondWind. If you use ship code falling you can also get free shipping. You can also have Cpap.com fax your doctor a request for prescription and they can fax it back directly to them if desired.

If your prescription says cpap you can buy either machine but if it says Auto you can only buy an Auto.

You only need a specific script for that model when you are dealing with a DME because they get a fixed amount no matter what make and model of CPAP/APAP they provide. They'd rather give you a brick and pocket the extra money. Online, since its your pocket that pays, they are happy to sell you the most expensive model.
If you want the script to deal with a DME, simply tell the doctor you want a ResMed S9 Autoset because you've done your homework and you feel that's the best machine for you. If your do for argues that fixed pressure is better, then simply tell him/her that the machine can easily be set up as a fixed pressure CPAP but it will be versatile enough in case your needs change and it has good data to evaluate the efficacy of treatment.
The doctor works for you and if the doctor is so arrogant as to negate your research and wishlist, it's time to find another doctor (any doctor will do).

My doctor tied to talk me out of it too. I told him it allowed me to set a titration level and to turn Auto off and I wanted it...basically there is no reason to deny you. Best wishes.

Re: How to convince the doctor to prescribe S9 Autoset?
Thanks for all the responses! Just to clarify, can the doctor just write "CPAP" on the prescription without any other information (ie. pressure, add humidifier, etc)? I think it'd be easier to get my psychiatrist to write a prescription by just telling her my old machine broke and I am very depressed without a replacement! Just that she might ask for details :S
Re: How to convince the doctor to prescribe S9 Autoset?
The prescription form will likely have a numeric code which stands for both CPAP and APAP. Check out the Rx form on cpap.com's website:

and secondwindcpap.com's form:
http://www.secondwindcpap.com/PAF.pdf
I had to buy out of pocket -- I've purchased one machine from cpap.com, and one from secondwindcpap. In both cases I brought the forms to my doc's office and he filled the form out and returned it to me. No problem. I faxed the forms to the companies and had the original to keep in my records.

Re: How to convince the doctor to prescribe S9 Autoset?
In my case, I convinced that I have insomia, wake up in middle of a night for 2 hrs and back to sleep.
I can not tolerate cpap high pressure during 2 hrs. Also I need Resmed s9 autoset since the algorithm
to detect apnea and increase pressure is faster than other machine. Good luck.
