How many times have you had to boil tap pap

Post by nanwilson » Mon Aug 19, 2013 7:57 am

I am still trying to get my tap pap mouth piece right. My kit came with 2 mouth guards and I am assuming that the smallest one is the new and improved one. I have boiled and re-fit it 3 times already and need to do it again, the first time it was too tight, like Pugsy says we would suck the chrome off a bumper, now its too loose and moves when I move..... I am going to do the fit thing again and see if I can get it right this time. How much trouble have you had in getting the right fit????????

And by the way... Cpap.com are the best, When I received my kit there was a set of head gear in the box, I knew darn well it was a mistake and sent them back a message via cpap.com chat. I was told to just keep it as it had probably fallen into the box by mistake. CPAP.COM are the BEST, not only do they rectify a problem as soon as they hear about it, they gave me a set of headgear...FREE just because their packer made a mistake and sent it to me.

Anyway... about the boil and bite trick, how have you all managed to get it right?????
Cheers

It took me 3 times with the first (not the improved) mouth guard.
When I got the improved mouth guard I had already figured out that very little sucking was needed so it only took me 2 times to get it just right.
Then I got the 2nd (long story there) new and improved mouth guard and I got the fit right the first time with it.
It's actually not snug at all...just enough so it doesn't fall off my upper teeth and removing is super easy.
There's a fine line though...so just keep at it till you get it just right.
I found that even with just a little gentle sucking that what originally felt okay ended up being a bit snug so with the last fitting I rocked the mouth guard back and forth just a little while it was cooling after the first initial sucking for molding and that seemed to do the trick for me. It seems to shrink a little with the final cooling.

I may have to RISE but I refuse to SHINE.

Thanks Bud....
I think I may have screwed it up as I now have a hole in the front. I am missing the two upper eye teeth and if I suck hard it folds into the holes . I thought I had it right last night but then it would wiggle up and down in the front... Aha... just took it out of my mouth and it is snug now but not tight...except for the bit where my two teeth are gone Maybe I FINALLY have it right, if not I will have to switch to the bigger mouth piece and try and mold it as this one is really deformed... grrrrr.
Thanks

Just the once.

But I read all the experience from Pugsy and others first. Imagine how long you might take to get it right without cpaptalk!

Wonder if Tap PaP are going to modify their instructions.

It also took me 3 or 4 tries with the first mouth piece. But I was having a different problem ... I had managed to get it right in the back but too low in the front, so that I couldn't move the pillows up all the way to my nose. And I do not have a freakishly large philtrum.

Then I found that if I bit down too hard in the front the result would be near impossible to remove, because I have a small overbite which became wedged. So it took me some trial and error to find a fit that accomodated all of those issues.

Interestingly (to me at least) I had none of that trouble with the re-designed piece.

I redid mine so many times I thought I killed it but I didn't. It takes a lot of abuse.

I hope everyone realizes that you do not actually need to boil the Tap Pap? All I do is put it in a cup of hot water for a minute or two, take it out, let it cool for a minute or so, then put it in my mouth. My definition of a minute may vary from yours, so I put it in the hot water until it is less opaque. I can't quite see through it, but it is soft. That is all you need.

Yup Sleepy... we realize that we're NOT boiling it, just putting it in boiling water... just a figure of speech
I did mine again and it has seemed to work just fine, 0 leak and it is just snug but not tight. I think I got it right at last!
