We also like our teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. And let's not forget our grains, drams, ounces, pounds, and (English) tons.squid13 wrote:Hey we Americans like our Fahrenheit, Yards and Inches, Miles and miles per hourrobysue wrote:For those Celsius-challenged Americans out there: 40C = 104F
If we're farmers, we also like our acres, pecks, and bushels.
But out of curiosity: Anybody else remember arithmetic problems asking you to convert rods to miles?

Yes, in high school I think it was. Had problems with it then and I wouldn't even think about it now.robysue wrote:[But out of curiosity: Anybody else remember arithmetic problems asking you to convert rods to miles?

I remember when they put the Kilometer signs along the roads trying to get us to convert. The only thing I ever remembered was 0 degrees Celsius was 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

What about links and chains?
Wikipedia wrote:It [a chain] measures 66 feet, or 22 yards, or 100 links, or 4 rods (20.1168 m).
There are 10 chains in a furlong, and 80 chains in one statute mile. An acre is the area of 10 square chains
(that is, an area of one chain by one furlong).

Come to think of it, I suspect that all of these bizarre English units were created
by Math teachers for the express purpose of incorporating them into "word" problems.

Nope, we hate them. We'd much rather use the metric system.jdm2857 wrote:Come to think of it, I suspect that all of these bizarre English units were created

I just wonder if OP got his humidifier working again and what he/she did to dry it out.
