Post by vicinsb » Thu Jun 08, 2006 5:16 pm

I go in tonight for 2nd study and to wear cpap for the first time. Not sure what to expect. Any support on what I should know before I go will be appreciated! Thanks.

more of what happened the first time

you will just have more of what happened the first time
just relax and go with the flow

if you are nervous talk to the techs and voice
your concerns.

try to remember the mask if you like it

Good luck! I did a split study - but I believe you will need to be hooked up again to the electrodes, and they will start you out on the cpap machine - they will probably ask if you know if you are a mouth breather? if so, you may use a full face mask or they may just have you try the nasal mask which are very comfortable. They will (probably) start you on a really low pressure until you fall asleep, then will push the pressure up until any/all apnea's or hypopneas are gone - so they know what pressure you will need at home - or range - so likely similar to your first one, but with air being pushed at you - again good luck and take care! Also, be sure to ask as many questions in the morning, ie, what was my pressure? what was my ahi? oxygen levels w/ cpap?
should I get apap for a bigger range? when will I meet w/ dr or dme? etc.

Thank you for the support and the questions to ask. When I went in for my first SS the tech showed me a lot of masks and seemed like he would give me my choice of what I wanted to try. If I don't like one, do I try another one there? Will I be leaving with a mask? Any suggestions of a mask to definately try would be helpful...I know by reading its quite a personal thing! Thanks so much!

masks
it is very personal

i like the comfortlite 2 cl2
it is a nasal I did not like the idea of a full face mask

do you breath out your mouth ... you probably need a full face ff

look at cpap.com at mask and see if any appeal to you.
that is what i did... picturing how i would sleep in each

do you sleep on ur side or back ... different masks work for
different types of sleeping

hope this gives u a thought or two

Masks

Please make sure to demand and take WHATEVER time that you need to try as many masks as you need to try until you find one that suits you. Make sure to try the masks AT PRESSURE and in the position which you most usually like to sleep in. (Yes, that means lying down). Settle for nothing less since a mask with which you have a brief, seemingly friendly acquaintance with will turn into a MONSTER that will bite you in the night.

Seriously. This is the SINGLE most important advice that any of us here will give you.
