newbie question on AHI

Post by oak » Fri Jul 26, 2013 12:14 pm

Last night I used the same mask, same bed, same sleeping time, same everything, and my AHI went up to 11.5, when it had been 2 or 3 every night for two weeks of CPAP. I dont have access to a card reader quite yet, so cant look at sleepyhead data or anything, but can someone give me some idea as to why that might have happened? I am clueless.

Impossible to have much of an idea without seeing the AHI break down and when the events occurred.
It there are a bunch of events getting flagged around a time you were awake that might explain it. The machine will often flag awake breathing irregularities as some sort of apnea event. It doesn't know if you are awake or not.
So if you spent some time awake on the machine last night that might explain the higher AHI.

I WAS awake more last night. Took me a couple of hours to get to sleep. Didnt think I was holding my breath or anything though.

You probably weren't holding your breath in the sense that you think you were but our normal awake breathing is a lot more erratic than we ever thought it would be and the machine can and will flag awake events. Often centrals but sometimes the other events.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Being awake is a very real possible explanation and I bet when you do get the software up and running that most of what you see in that AHI occurred while awake.
