Face shrinkage!

Post by Gidgie » Fri Jun 02, 2006 10:40 pm

Had an interesting experience last night (well, I'll call it that....) Went to bed as usual, expecting my usual 7-8 hours of CPAP bliss, only to wake about 4 a.m. with mask leaks! Now, I haven't had that problem since moleskin came along, and I was understandably annoyed......but too sleepy/lazy to get up and do anything about it........so I just jammed the mask up tight with my arm and pillow and tried to sleep some more, but the leaks kept happening. When at last I did get up, I saw what must have happened.........Yesterday my Dr. changed my meds..a much stronger water pill, because the warmer weather had me sweling up like a balloon no matter what I did.......anyways, I hadn't realized that my hands and feet wern't the only parts of me swelling.........when I looked in the mirror I saw that my face had actually shrunk! Water retention just might be something to consider if suddenly a hitherto good-fitting mask suddenly 'springs a leak'

Be sure to tell your MD about the facial swelling.

Gidgie,

I assume you're NOT complaining about that....?

I've read some articles in the last few months that suggest that doctors should consider prescribing (more often) a simple diuretic, "water pill" for high blood pressure. They are also significantly cheaper than BP meds.

Best wishes,

Den

For anyone who cares.....

According to WEBMD:

Diuretic

A diuretic is a substance that removes water from the body by promoting urine formation and the loss of salt (sodium).

Caffeine is a common diuretic, although it is very mild. Diuretic medications include furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, metolazone, and spironolactone. These medications may be used as part of treatment for conditions that cause swelling from water retention (edema), such as heart failure, hypertension, or liver or kidney disease.

Krousseau.......did discuss it with both my Docs......changed meds from hydrochlorthiazide to furosimide......bp is 120/60, kidney function has actually improved immensely since starting CPAP.......no more night treks for me......possibly one of my other meds is causing the problem, or, as my internist suggested, it may be my intolerance for heat, which gets worse each year.
