as an experiment, I put the card in upside-down as a "simulated bad card", the message I get is: "THERE WAS AN ERROR COMMUNICATING WITH THE SMARTCARD"...blah blah blah etc.
but no *poof*, as you mentioned.

Not a Valid Respironics Smartcard?
Ric,
One morning I was trying to download from the card and kept getting that same error message you're talking about. I rebooted, searched, checked and coudn't find ANYTHING that would cause this message. Imagine my surprise when I found out I had the card in wrong. Don't know if I was having a senior or blonde moment.....

Well, after much testing I found the root of my problem.
I installed Encore on 2 other computers and got the same results (Not a valid Respironics Smartcard).
Looks like my reader was bad.
I ordered a serial version of the reader from CPAP.com, got it today and I was able to read my card immediately.
I would suggest everyone with a serial port order the serial version. No usb drivers to futz with and very easy installation
On a side note I changed from a FF mask to the Comfort Lite 2 (with pillows) last week. I noticed that my pressures from the nights I was on the CL2 were maxed out at 20 most of the night. I went back to the Ultra Mirage FF Monday (after coughing with the CL 2 and taped mouth almost blew my eyeballs out of their sockets <grin>) and have been successful making it seal properly. Pressure is back to the normal 12 to 14. I guess I just didn't tighten it up properly. Still no red ring so I guess I'm okay.

reader in hub?
Is the reader plugged directly into rhe comp and not into a hub? Many of us have had issues when we ran the readers into hubs - the refusal to format was one symptom I got.
Yep, reader was plugged right into the computer, no hub. Never unpulgged it once I installed it. Read okay for about a week then just stopped.
I would have to disagree about USB readers. I've been programming and reading smartcards for years and never had an issue with any serial port device. Anytime you have to install specific drivers for a USB device it's nothing but trouble.
Of course, your milage may vary <grin>.

The big problem with serial ports is that few new computers (especially notebooks) have them any more.
USB is actually a type of serial port with some smarts. USB devices can usually plug into a serial (PS/2 style) port with an adaptor.
DSM
PS glad you got the problem resolved. I was never confident the card had been 'zapped' as I 1st mentioned.
