How to remove yellowing from mask?

Post by kteague » Wed May 01, 2013 2:04 am

Ugh. The metal and plastic inside my old Headrest mask broke so I had to drag an even older one out of the closet (kept just for such purposes) and use it. Soaked it in vinegar water so I know it's clean, but it looks awful. Anybody got a tip for getting some of the yellowing out of the plastic or is it permanent?

I think it might be permanent.

I put the smaller parts of my quattro mask in the dishwasher & it removes all trace of yellowing in the plastic

another thought is to try a 2 part water, one part bleach soaking...

good luck

Dave

Hi kteague

did you try to boil it with some soda powder (ex. Arm & Hammer) ? I don't know if that work but some people said they did that to clean the silicon parts.

I haven't try with the Headrest I only boiled Swift FX cushions once and they became super clean. I need to do that one of this days to my Ultra Mirage FFM cushion because I tried vinegar and it didn't work.

It was 3 minutes boiling I think with some soda powder.

I would be cautious with bleach. It yellows nylon, and weakens a great many materials.

Baking soda and water boiling didn't work to remove some yellowing that I wanted to remove.
I haven't found anything that will remove "age yellowing".

while silicon can take high heat, the plastic mask parts cannot. i would be most careful with heat, amonia bleach and other harsh cleaning agents on plastic.
baking soda. white vinegar, dish soap would be the only products i would use on my quattro mask parts.
yellowing is only a cosmetic aberration. it doesnt affect performance.
