Forbes: How a Sleep Study Can Change Your Life

Post by Kate M » Sat Apr 27, 2013 11:21 am

This article on the Forbes.com site appeared the other day. It is basic information, but I like seeing information getting out there about this.

Yep. He is a smart RPSGT.

The guy that wrote the article also did a great job of keeping it simple and straightforward.

I like when they mentioned REM rebound. I wasn't sure that it was medically recognized. I certainly seemed to have it when I started CPAP.

Thanks for posting Kate!

I am hoping for it! I have read that with sleep apnea, people have very vivid dreams (supposedly because the apnea wakes them up in the middle of REM), but that has not been my experience. I hardly dream at all. When I do, I dream those very busy anxious distressing dreams where you never find what you're looking for or accomplish what you are attempting, or you are running from something. I don't remember any details of the dreams, only the anxiety of situations like that, and I hate it. I hope that I DO experience that REM rebound. I haven't had a pleasant dream in years. I can hope!

I have had very vivid dreams so vivid that I've asked people "Did x happen?". I've had them for quite a few years, I have also had the same dreams as you Kate.

What is your AHI? Do you use the machine software to keep up with the efficacy data?

I don't know my AHI yet. I don't even have my CPAP yet. I am going to see my pulmonologist/sleep doctor on Monday afternoon. I had a split study on 4/17 and all I was told was, "You definitely have OSA" and "You did great on the CPAP." I have not seen or heard my results yet and at the time of the study, I did not know enough to ask my AHI. I will find out on Monday though! I was hoping to get my machine this past week, but the DME company is dragging their feet. (Someone was out sick so everything came to a halt!) When I DO get my machine, I definitely will be using the software and monitoring my progress. For now, all I have is 02 at night, which actually does help me sleep a little better.

Make triple-dog sure you don't accept any machine except one which is "fully data-capable". See http://maskarrayed.wordpress.com/2011/0 ... -machines/

Don't let your DME screw you. You are at a critical juncture.

Thanks for the advice,Granny! (EDIT- ooops! I mean Gramps!) Yes, this board helped me know the right questions to ask. I have an RX for a ResMed S9 Elite, so I think I'm good on that. I know to not accept anything less from the DME. At my Doc appt tomorrow, I will ask him to change the Rx to an AutoSet but won't cry too much if he says no, (with an adequate explanation of course) since the Elite is at least fully data capable. But I WILL learn from the discussion how flexible my doc is and if he is willing to treat me like a partner in managing my treatment, or rather expects me to follow orders without question. If it ends up to be the latter, then I guess I need to start looking for another who will.
