CPAPmax Pillow smells awful!

Post by ReadyforRest » Sun Apr 21, 2013 11:16 am

I bought this contour pillow yesterday. It cost $79, which I consider to be pricey. You can't actually smell it at the DME's because it's sealed in plastic. So I didn't know it stunk until I had already paid for it, got home, opened the plastic and took it out. Then Peeewww!

The smell is coming from inside, from the foam they use. And it just reeks. I slept on it last night with a pillow on top of it for more softness (since it's kind of hard) and as a kind of buffer from the smell. I really like the shape, contour cutouts on each side , but find it's kind of thin, not a deep as my papillow (which I like and it doesn't smell at all). But this stink issue is awful. It smells so much, I doubt that the smell will ever go away entirely.

So now what do to? They said in the DME's that since it's a pillow, once you've opened it, you can't return it. But don't you think off-gassing smells are something that is a mistake, and so would be considered a flaw? I would like to return it ... well I really wish it was thicker, and that it didn't smell, because then I would like to keep it.

I'm going to call them tomorrow to ask if I can return it on the grounds that it stinks to high heaven and I don't think breathing in those fumes is good for my health.

Has anyone else had a problem with this pillow reeking to high heaven?

How about:
1) letting it off-gas for a few days
2) put it in the dryer for a spin with a fabric softener sheet
3) seal it up in a bag with baking soda for a few days

If you can return it what do you have to lose?

At our house - when we have smallish items like this that are new and smell we put it out on our screened in back porch (weather permitting, we live in central Illinois) for a few days. I realize not everyone has that option. The dryer idea that was mentioned sounds good too.

You can also stick some "scented dryer sheets" into the pillow case to help with the smell until it dissipates.

Here is a link that will help you out, whatever you do, do not stick foam in the dryer.

Contour sells it with a two year warranty. I have this one and there was no smell.

Yes, that's the pillow. I am going to try to return it. Seriously, I do not want to breathe in those fumes, and it's such a chemical smell that I doubt any airing or treatment will get rid of it. I've left it in another room for two days now with the zipper open, and it still reeks as badly as it did when I took it out of the package. My husband just smelled it and said, "Oh God, that's terrible!"

It's going back tomorrow, come hell or high water ... lol

I picked up a mattress cover a year ago last fall. It stayed in the shed from october until march before it finally stopped stinking up the house. Try full sun therapy for it for a week or so and re-evaluate.

My husband had a stinky latex pillow that never stopped reeking until it began to crumble.
Send it back--there is a defect.

Thanks for this link, Bobby269. I filled out their online chat inquiry, telling them about the pillow. Got a response this morning:

Good Morning Pat,

I apologize for the inconvience, this usually occurs when they wrap the pillow in plastic too soon after they produce it. What we could do is replace it for you, with a new one, however if you wish to get a refund you will need to return it to the store in which you bought it from since you have paid them.

Normally, if you just take the cover completely off, and let it air out. If you let it air out the odor should discipate for you.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Have a Great Day
