Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
If you take a sleeping pill in order to get thru the sleep study, wouldn't that affect the study?

Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
It probabaly affects some people enough to alter their results.
I used an ambien for my sleep study, and my results were very useful. I had an ahi of 79 during the diagnosis, and my titration was so good that I have not needed to change my pressure settinsg at all. It has been almost a year, and my pressure settings are 11-17. My 95% at or below is usually 12 something, and my ahi is usually below 2. And when needed, it does get up to 16 something on occasion. I know of only one time that it actualluy got to 17, thought it did get to 16.9 a few times. And I think I have had 2 nights above ahi 5Maybe 10 nights above ahi 3. So, my settings have worked very well for me.
I am a severe night owl, so I normally do not go to bed before 3am, so I was afraid I would not be able to sleep at the sleep study. I also struggle to sleep in hotel rooms, being awake a portion of every hour. So, the medication helped me to sleep during the times frame they needed.

It's better for you to sleep with sleeping tablet than not sleep at all and have to do it again
Most doctors will prescribe it but note to the techs that "only if necessary".

Agreed. My sleep study was more expensive than most. $6,000 and only 85% was covered by insurance. I was told that if I did not sleep a minimum of 5 hours, insurance would not pay any of it, and *I* would be stuck with the full bill. So, that would have been horrible if I did not sleep enough during the study.

Jeeeez. Talk about pressure. I have trouble believing that that's really a rule. (Then again, look at all the trillions of other nonsense that goes on.)zoocrewphoto wrote:sleepstar wrote:. . . Wow, no stress there. What a piece of work those guys are. I'd take a sleeping pill in that situation as well.zoocrewphoto wrote:sleepstar wrote:It's better for you to sleep with sleeping tablet than not sleep at all and have to do it again

Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
The good news is that the study was great. The sleep tech was awesome. She fitted with me the perfect mask on the first try. No leaks that night, and I have been using that same type mask now for almost a year. It took ME a while to master it, but I knew it was the mask for me since it fit so well at the sleep study. The bed was comfortable, and the room was like a little hotel room. I slept great and felt good the next day. So, the sleep study was well worth it. I do wish it had been less expensive as I am still paying it off. But I'm glad I did it.RogerSC wrote:Wow, no stress there. What a piece of work those guys are. Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
I used a .5mg zanax to relax .I pre-cleared this option with them . I new it would be strange and with all the leads it might be difficult to fall asleep. Worked like a charm slept good both nights, second night with the full face mask and only was slightly aware of the leaks and changing pressures as they ran tests. Good thing I did because the lady in the other room was shaking the walls with her snoring. Only had to get up once to go to the loo ,didn't have to signal them- they came thru the door when they saw me waking up but they always knocked first.
Fairly pleasant experience , good people.
I choose not to confuse the issue by trying on a bunch of masks , I wanted good sleep numbers and pressures . I know it is a prime time to try every mask they have , and if this was a second sleep study it would be different. I lacked the experience to evaluate masks and it worked for me. I did stay awake for awhile
with the mask on to adjust myself to it at the beginning of the test . I did the same at home to get used to the feeling and to practice taking it on and off as well as adjusting it. I think my gas mask training in the marines helped too --who would have guessed that one. Good luck to you. Happy trails to you!

Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
My Sleep doctor routinely prescribes Ambien CR for sleep studies. I was told that it has only a very minimal impact on the sleep study itself and that's a whole lot better than no sleep.
Gotta get the sleep to be able to study it.

Wow. That's ridiculous. Stupid insurance company.
Technically people with OSA have such a poor sleep anyway. It's the OSA that's likely to cause people to not sleep!
Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
it would be much better if the study were done in the home so that the data would actually represent how the person sleeps in the home

Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
My sleep doctor recommended Ambien and said they are trained to 'see through the effects of the pills'. Don't know if that is a line of crap, but that's what he said. I have heard of some folks with 'lab coat syndrome' throwing Xanax into the mix (for anti-anxiety), but that certainly would complicate things IMO.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Re: Sleeping Pill during Sleep Study
my sleep study was done at a major hospital and the room was right under the helicopter pad, so choppers were in and out all night and the noise of the rotor blades kept me awake......the sleep study technician wrote that I displayed severe sleep latency.........what a crock......it was the dang helicopters that kept me awake!!!

My sleep study was very uncomfortable. I never even thought about my insurance company not paying, if I didn't make it through it ok. They charged my insurance company $2400, and I thought that was high! It was a split one, and when they woke me up at midnight, they told me if I didn't fall asleep with the mask on in 45 minutes, they'd have to stop the treatment. I was so anxious and upset, but I was so tired and worn out from the apnea, I still fell asleep in 5 minutes. They make this more difficult than it has to be. I've cancelled three sleep study's for worrying about not being able to do it. I've never been a urinate on command kinda guy. It was loud and you could hear people talking outside my door the night of mine. I'd really like to complain, and I probably will. I'm so glad it's all over with.
I debated taking a sleeping pill, but was afraid it would effect the results. On all the documents I got from them, it never suggested taking a sleeping aid. So, I just toughed it out...
