CPAP & Urinary Health

Post by dos coyotes » Sat Mar 23, 2013 3:13 pm

I may be way off base here but I'm curious. I thought I'd read somewhere that getting up repeatedly in the middle of the night to urinate can be (among other things of course) a symptom/side effect (?) of sleep apnea.

I ask because among the various benefits I've found after just a month of treatment is that:
1) I awaken earlier in the morning
2) I feel more refreshed and have more energy
3) I dont take those involuntary naps in the afternoons
4) and I sleep through the night without getting up to urinate - which pre-treatment I was doing on an almost everyday basis - 2,3,4 times per night. The exception was a night of undisturbed bed rest and no trips to the john.

Now, that's the norm (undisturbed rest) and at most I find I occasionally might make that trip once in the night. Is this a ususal benefit of cpap???

Yes it is a benefit of cpap. You can do a forum search on nocturia, there are many references to it and how sleep apnea can cause/exacerbate it.

Good to hear how well you're doing.

Thanks J...

I've pretty much settled on the Swift FX nasal pillows as my mask of preference, and have left pressures at 8min/20max and my AHI is routinely below 1.0.

My last 7 days stats are ... AHI 0.64, Hours usage 6:44, Avg Pressure 10.25, 95% Pressure 14.50, Avg Leaks 6.76 and 95% leaks 18.00

During apnea events there is a stress hormone that gets produced and when that stress hormone goes to the kidneys then the kidneys kick into hyper drive and work harder and the by product is excess urine.
Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) is that stress hormone and there's a lot of information out there about it.
Here's Dr Parks take on things.

Pre CPAP I was getting up to pee just about every hour on the hour and pretty much a full (to the point of being uncomfortable) bladder.
That totally stopped as soon as I got my pressures tweaked a little so that my OSA was better controlled. It was really the first sign/symptom that I experienced that pretty much told me the cpap was doing its job...no more nighttime pee breaks.
Sleep through the night now and the bathroom is no longer the first place I stop when I get up in the AM.

Wonderful isn't it?
I broke my foot falling off the stairs going for a post midnight pee long before I got my cpap machine. I never before could understand the "breakfast in bed" (or anything else fun in the morning) because as soon as I woke up a little bit "Gotta Go NOW!!!" and you might as well stay up then.

I saw the title of the thread; and was hoping nobody had their mask on THAT wrong!

I have gotten the same benefit. I have BPH and have been getting prostate biopsies every 6 months due to high PSA levels. I usually get up every two hours to pee and blamed it on my prostate. In fact, I blew off a couple of sleep studies because I thought once they got me all wired up I would just have to go pee and they would have to undo all the leads. This time when I called for an appointment I explained my condition and the receptionist said " not a problem. It's very common" . So that reinforces your statement about apnea causing pee breaks. In fact once she got me all wired up for the test I had to use the bathroom. No problem. She just pulled the circuit board off the wall handed to me and away I went. During the test I didn't have to pee even once. And now it maybe or twice a night at the most.

My sleep tech was great. I actually woke up about an hour into the diagnosis phase and needed to use the bathroom. I was embarrassed as I knew it wasn't that far into it. I was lying there trying to get brave enough to call for help (to get unplugged) when she came in and rescued me. She said something about seeing I was awake and needing to adjust a wire. But I think she gets this enough that she knows to break the ice so we can ask, get it done, and get back to bed.

Later, when she woke me up to move to the titration phase, she asked if I wanted to use the bathroom first. Good idea. I then slept for almost 6 hours with NO bathroom trip. Amazing.

If I had known this was related, I might have asked for a sleep study a long time ago.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

When I had my study, I had been getting up about twice per night to pee. I arrived at 8:00, and went pee. Then, she hooked me up and I went before going to bed at 10:00. Again at midnight, and then again at 2:00. Every two hours! I got masked up then, and didn't go again until 6:45 when she woke me up in a rush to get me unhooked since she was to leave at 7:00. It was such a tough night, she waited till the last minute to see if she could test some higher pressures while I was in REM.

Now, getting up even once is unusual. I love it.
