Multiple machine dilemma

Post by cosmo » Fri Mar 22, 2013 11:21 am

I am using straight cpap at 12.5cm with exhale relief off. I'm currently using my best machine which I bought new, S9 Autoset.

I have multiple machines, all are auto/data capable and I have humidifier units for all. In theory, there should be no difference in treatment from any of the machines with my settings.

Resmed S9 Autoset (main)
PR 560 auto (insurance freebie)
PR 550 auto (low hours, got for dirt cheap)
Intellipap auto (travel)

Should I alternate between a different machine during the summer months to have even wear and tear? The S9 is the only machine I have a heated hose for so I will stick to that during the winter.

What a dilemma... Can you sleep at night or do you stay up worrying about it?

I have 2 bilevel auto machines..the S9 VPAP Auto and the PR S1 BiPap Auto (no heated hose model, darn it).
I feel the same no matter which machine I use in terms of how I might think in terms of OSA being well managed.
Some minor differences in both machines but overall same pressure settings on either machine give me same results.

I originally thought I would change once a month but got lazy and didn't do it. Wintertime definitely the S9 with the Climateline because my preferred humidity setting and bedroom temp means guaranteed rain out.

If I was in a position like you...and I wanted to keep all the machines I think I would rotate usage just to get some hours on the machine....just in case something happened and you had a warranty issue pop up. It would be a bummer to find the machine you "saved" for 2 years crapped out with 100 hours on it for some oddball reason 2 months after warranty ran out.

I am almost out of warranty on my PR S1 BiPap but I have a year left on the S9. I am going to switch back to the PR S1 BiPap since we hopefully will be having warmer weather (though of course we had 3 inches of snow yesterday and looking at some really low temps for next few nights) probably first of April. Finish up my warranty time using the BiPap just in case it wants to crap out before warranty time runs out.

Now if you think you might be leaning towards selling one of those machines later....different story.

You know that there are going to be newer machines eventually and long before you will ever wear out your machine stash.
You will likely be tempted by the lure of "the latest and greatest".

It is a dilemma if you're a borderline clinical hoarder

I'm not going to sell any of it. A hoarder doesn't get rid of stuff. Rotating them would probably be good to make sure they're all in good working order.

Hi cosmo!

I would go with my favorites and use the others as backup.

By the time one wears out the new ones will be so much better you will "have" to get one.

Have a great week!

Well we certainly don't want a hoarder to have to get rid of his stuff
You should see the pile of Swift FX nasal pillows that I have now and I now have decided to use the Tap Pap.

Rotating would be a good idea I think at least while under warranty...just in case. It's unlikely that there would be a mechanical problem but with Murphy's Law and all...wouldn't hurt to cover the bases as best you can.

Is that a real suggestion or general harassment at someone who is going through a crisis?

Cosmo,

You have no clue what a real crisis is.

I wish I could have a dilemma like that...don't have insurance that pays for cpap machines nor do I have the money to buy. Must be nice to be able to spend on stuff like that and not worry about it . TOYS for boys.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Cannot find the old thread but I remember discussion of the effect of non use on machine parts and the suggestion spare machines be used periodically. Anybody else remember that?

I am sure there is some truth to that.

But, just last week I plugged in my 1st CPAP that I used for almost exactly 5 years & then it sat in the closet for another 9+ years.

Still runs perfectly ! !

Do you get free mask at least up there?

If I hadn't purchased these big ticket items, my employer would have pocketed the amount that was sitting in my health spending account (FSA). I was only taking back what was rightfully mine. Didn't even have to use any force this time

I'm shelving my S9 for the season. Its not cold anymore over here. 70's this weekend.

I sort of resemble that remark.

What I did, after I started accumulating machines, was to rotate my machines for about a month at a time. They were all similar machines and identically configured, but had different firmware levels in them......and, they did report somewhat different information (like leak data for one). But, it was hard not knowing what differences were coming from my sleeping and what differences were attributable to the machines' sensors and recording characteristics.

In 2010 I happened to get one ("never used" and with the firmware level I wanted) from a seller on the CPAPauction site that I decided I wanted to use for a much longer time to see if and how my sleeping data changed over months and years (and it does). So, that's the one I've been using as my primary (every night) machine since Sept. 1, 2010. I use some of the other machines for naps or backup or just to make sure they still work.
