GAS MASTERS UNITE

Post by Sleeping With The Enemy » Thu Feb 10, 2005 7:34 pm

I want to hear from all of you who have experienced problems with bloating and excessive gas, not because I'm some kind of sick, anal person.

My MD told me that I need to sleep with a rolled up wash cloth under my chin so my chin doesn't drop to my chest while sleeping.

I have awakened a couple of times in the past week, since starting on c-flex, with this problem.

I have had severe heartburn for probably 10 years, now taking Protonix.

PLEASE HELP--SHOULD I GO SEE A SLEEP SPECIALIST OR BUTT DOCTOR????

Heidi, who if not for the hose, would be stuck to the ceiling every morning.

Well, I don't have the heartburn problem, but I do make some interesting noises in the morning! I am even told my bottom sings at night as well. I'm no doctor but all that air is going in, and I don't think it's all coming out of the mouth!

Did you say you had an Auto-Pap? I have a regular one w/humidifier...I wonder if that plus the pressure setting would make a difference?

Or you could just try turning the pressure down a bit. Worked for me.

Chrisp,

Since you think this is so funny. My wish for you is that you bloat tonight like you never have before. In the morning, let me know how funny it was.

I've used CPAP and BI-PAP and have experienced the gas problem not every morning, but quite a few. It is usually when I first wake up.

Thank God I am not a ballon because I'd be all over the room before all the air was depleted. For me it lasts about 5 minutes, has no order, but it certainly was a surpise side-affect I had not anticipated.

I also find if my mouth falls open during the night I get the same situation only from another open oriface.

There only only three other openings I am waiting for this to occur. My ears and the third has been out of commission for some time.

I'd cover both bases and see a sleep certified BUTTologist... In the end, make him give you an AutoPAP.

Well, since you come to us with questions about your sleep, maybe we can help you with your butt as well. I mean, I'm no expert in FUNCTION, but I've certainly studied my share of women's butts in my time.

Liam, who will know his wife saw this post if he finds himself crazy-glued to his mask in the morning.

Heidi, what was your prescribed pressure from your sleep study, and what pressure range (if it's an autopap) is your machine set for?

Heidi,
The cpap pressure could be too high. Also, have you checked for food allergies or anything like that? I found out a few years ago that I had some food "sensitivities" and when I stayed away from those foods I was much better. Then when I started cpap I had a few problems the first couple of weeks, but got used to it and haven't had any problems since. If you've had the problem for so many years, I'd really suspect a common food item is giving you trouble, and the cpap is just adding to it and making it worse.
It's the circle thing agan - a causes b, which makes a worse, which causes more b etc.

update

Post by Sleeping With The Enemy » Fri Feb 11, 2005 8:36 am

Okay, just want to give more information. The doctor who kept bugging me to have the sleep study was fired from the clinic. One of the reasons I think is because some of the patients and other doctors thought he spent too much time with his patients. I believe there was also a personality conflict among the MDs at the clinic. They didn't care for his practice, probably because it made the rest of them look like losers. He is from Canada and he is the best MD I have ever run into in my 37 years.

Anyway, I called my doctor that I started seeing after the good one left. She told me to stick a washcloth under my chin. I was commenting on how I was going to sleep and keep that under my chin when she abruptly said "I have to go, goodbye" Very Rude!!! I, being sleep deprived and frustrated, immediately broke down crying in front of my whole family.

What did I do, I called my old MD at home, which I have done before. He returned the call, we talked for about 30 minutes. He said he has not forgotten about me, felt bad about the way I was treated by his replacement. He told me at that clinic all you are is a number and diagnosis. I told him to hurry up and find another clinic to work at, he said he is working on it. He told me to try putting a ball in the back of my shirt and decrease the pressure on my Remstar Auto w/C-Flex. I also read somewhere to avoid carbonated beverages, which when I look back, I had pop on those nights I woke up with bloating.

Anyway, turned down pressure, did try the washcloth, not the ball thing. Did not have pop. Slept very good last night.

Oh, yeah, my "savior MD" also told me that he doesn't mind me calling him even though he does not work there anymore. He said to call him in a couple of days and let him know how things are going.

WHY CAN'T THERE BE MORE MD'S LIKE THIS IN THE WORLD. I TOLD HIM I WOULD FOLLOW HIM ANYWHERE. PROBABLY NOT TO CANADA BECAUSE ITS TOO FAR.

As soon as he settles somewhere I'm going to tell Allina Health System to go to h....!!

Heidi, who finally found a gem of an MD and doesn't want to lose him!

Wow. Too bad you're already married, a doc like that (even unemployed) might be worth going to the extreme to hang on to.

Come to think of it, where are you located? Maybe I'll ditch my job and my wife and move there and marry him myself.

Liam, who has a great primary doctor, but said primary doctor has stated flat out that he knows next to nothing about sleep disorders and/or CPAP, etc.

Liam,

The first time my husband went to see the doctor, because he had pneumonia--he smokes. The Canadian MD told him, "I don't know you, but I care about you and your health...."

So my husband knows all about my love for my MD. A few months ago I went through a deep depression, this MD hugged me and let me sob. He told me that if he could make things better for me he would do it in a minute. He encouraged me to get that sleep study done that he has bugging me about, so I did. In hindsight, I think the sleep apnea just really started to take a toll on me back in November when I went into that depression.

My husband says he thinks I'm more tired since I had my sleep study. Maybe I too am more focused on sleep and how much I am not getting which may make things worse.

Liam, try my suggestion to see someone who may be able to prescribe something to help you settle down, even if it is only temporary.

Well, what I think I'm gonna do is try the Halcion again, WITHOUT the CPAP for a few days, so I can see whether it was the Halcion or the CPAP or the Comfort Lite or a combination of them that had me waking up with a nasty, hung-over feeling.

Maybe I'll take one of them tonight, and see how I feel tomorrow morning.

Heidi and everyone, thank you again for your continued suggestions. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but I really love how this group of people pulls for each other and really tries to help!

Liam, Chairmain of the Department of Redundancy Department, named Liam.

Darn Heidi,
I wish my doctor was like that! Mine has to be hit over the head with a 2 x 4 to get anything through, and even then it takes a few attempts. Tell your doc that if he ever wants to move to Maryland, I could find him a few patients.
