Hybrid or Full Face
I am currently using a Wisp mask, while I love the mask, i am strugglng with a chin strap. I can't find one that will keep my mouth closed and not irritate the skin under my chin. i'm also fighting some frequent nasal congestion. Because of that, as soon as my insurance allows it i want to try a new type of mask. My question is would a full face or a hybrid be better? I love the smaller footprint of the the hybrid, but I haven't heard a lot about them otherwise. I prefer to sleep on my side and know that can be an issue with full face masks. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah
Thanks,
Sarah

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
technically a hybrid IS a full face mask. It is just in two parts which makes it much more flexible. The Innomed/respcare hybrid is better. It has 3 sizes of pillows, and 3 sizes of mouth pices and a chin flap to keep your jaw in place.

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
Lots of forum members use the Innomed Hybrid with great success as well as the similar mask in the ResMed products called the Liberty.
There's no reason why anyone can't sleep on their side with any full face mask and that includes the Hybrid type. It may take a bit of work finding a way to not have the bed pillow add pressure to the mask and cause movement but it can be done. Maybe a different bed pillow???
Is your nasal congestion a chronic problem or only a night time problem?

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
The nasal congestion is only at night. I'm fine when I go to sleep but wake up about 3:30 all stuffy. It probably has something to do with the amount of furries in my bedroom but that isn't changing anytme soon, so I need to find a better solution for me.

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
Congestion on comes on during the night and does it go away in the morning after you have been up for a little while.
Maybe it isn't the furries in the bedroom. Might be your humidity going into your nose. Sometimes we need more and sometimes we need less. I know it sounds weird but nasal congestion can happen with either too much or not enough added moisture.
Do you have the climateline hose?
Or regular hose.?
What settings are you using with whichever hose you have?

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
I have a regular hose with a homemade cover on it. I will try adjusting the humidity and see if that helps any. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
So does the hybrid stop you from going slackjawed and mouth leaking or is a traditional full face better for that?

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
The innomed/respcare one does. The liberty doesn't have the chin flap. Note that some people hate the chin flap and have cut it off the Innomed one.sectheatre wrote:So does the hybrid stop you from going slackjawed and mouth leaking or is a traditional full face better for that?
Mouth leaking doesn't matter since it is really a full face mask so the pressure is the same whether your mouth is open or not. However keeping your mouth shut is good for yor teeth.

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
Any mask (Hybrid or Full Face) that has a lower strap that routes from your chin, below ears, and around back of your head, has a tensional force that encourages a slackjaw.sectheatre wrote:So does the hybrid stop you from going slackjawed and mouth leaking or is a traditional full face better for that?
One way to mitigate and counter this lower strap tensional force is to use a good quality (one that has little to no stretch) chin strap like the PapCap.
One thing that I noticed when experimenting and seeking out my ideal mask was that FF masks placed pressure on the blood vessels around my sinuses and actually created sinus congestion. For that reason, I had a preference for the Hybrid/Liberty mask style. In the end I trained myself not to mouth leak and have never used the Liberty mask. I ended up keeping it stored in my closet. I kept it in case I ever got a sinus infection but turns out I have not had the flu or a cold or sinus allergies ever since going on CPAP almost 7 years ago. So the Liberty may end up sitting in my closet for who knows how long.

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
Thanks Pugsy for the suggestion on the humidity. Last night i turned it down and was able to sleep all night without congestion. I know it will take a few more nights to prove that was the cause but looks promising now. Thanks!

Re: Hybrid or Full Face
The bottom of my Quattro mask sits in the indentation between my lower lip and my chin. I can easily breathe through my nose or mouth. Where it rides, stops me from any of the mouth drop that some folks have mentioned.
I could never wear any type of mask that inserts something into my nose... cushions or pillows. it was tough enough making it through the sleep study with those little probes sensors stuck into it.
