how to adjust the nasal pillows

Post by nwyant » Thu Feb 21, 2013 2:44 pm

[/b]I tried to take a nap this afternoon with my new machine. How in the world do you tell when the nasal pillows are doing there job. He showed me how to put them in and I did fine while he was here, but now that I'm on my own I can't seem to get them adjusted. How tight should they be and how do I tell when they are in right?? I'm going to give them the weekend and then if I can't adjust to them I will call and see about getting the sleepweaver soft nasal mask. I don't know why I have the nasal pillows to start with anyway. I guess that is what my doctor recommended.

See if this helps
http://maskarrayed.wordpress.com/swift- ... ing-guide/

and this
http://www.cpaplibrary.com/nasal-pillows.html

If it hurts...Straps are too tight. If you look in the mirror and your nose reminds you of a piggy nose..that top strap is too tight.

I can slide my hand under my straps easily. I can put my mask on with one finger if I have to...or one hand when I broke my wrist.
People tend to over tighten the straps thinking more is better but it isn't.

Loose is the secret.
Air pressure is the force that seals the mask to your face.
If nasal pillows give you a piggy nose, they are way too tight.

When looking at the nasal pillows...looking down on them right before slipping them on the cones form an upside down V.
If it looks like a W its upside down.

/ \ upside down V. so the tips of the inner cones are close together.

If you need a picture I will try to find one.

All the advice given you so far is excellent, but you might get advice specific to your nasal pillow mask if you told us which one you have.

In the meantime, I would only add to what has been already said, which would apply to any nasal pillow mask, this reply to how you will know:

Position the exhaust vents so they are blowing straight into a wide open space, and not against any fabric or object. If you still hear a hiss sound in the vicinity of your nose, you do not yet have a good seal. A slight, very slight, adjustment will eliminate the little hiss and give you a good seal.

How you make that adjustment may depend on which nasal pillow mask you have.

Regards, Nate

I'm so confused. I just didn't feel like anything was happening when I tried to take a nap. I don't think it sealed.

It would help if we knew what mask you are using.

Actually that's the way it's supposed to feel...like nothing is happening.
When they are sealed properly...you don't hear a leak...you don't feel a leak and breathing is nice and easy.

Is this the GoLife nasal pillow you mentioned in another thread?

It would really help if you would add your equipment to your profile so we can see at a glance what you are trying to use.
