New CPAP user - Results from Night 1

Post by Rhyno » Tue Feb 19, 2013 4:55 pm

Last night was my first night to use my CPAP. Everything went pretty good. Only woke up a couple times and I feel tons better today than I have in a long time.
I do have 1 question.
During my sleep study my AHI was 105. I had 9.9 Apneas/hr the rest were Hyponeas.
My O2 saturation was 56%
During the second half of the night with CPAP at a pressure of 13, I had an AHI of 0 with O2 saturation at 92%.

On my S9 Auto this morning when I woke up It said I had an AHI of 8.8. I know that's tons better than 105, but I was curious why it wasn't closer to my numbers during the sleep study while using the CPAP. I'm guessing this is normal and my body needs to get use to everything. Also not sure what the difference is in how they detect the hyponeas in the sleep study and how the machine knows whats going on.

When you look at the AHI you need to break in down into the 3 event categories.
How much is central, obstructive apnea and hyponea hourly average?
You also need to evaluate the impact of any possible leaks.

While at the sleep lab the tech was able to keep things tweaked just right for optimal results.
We don't have that luxury at home.

Do you know about the software so you can look at the whole night instead of just the AHI?

In addition to what Pugsy said, realize that the machines are not as accurate at flagging events. According to your email you woke up a couple of times. Often when you are awake you can confuse the machine. When you are at the sleep lab you're wired up (you're on the grid!) ... and therefore they know when you are asleep, not to mention what level of sleep. So if an event occurs, it's for real.

The machine doesn't have the advantage of the EEG signals, so it does its work all based on your breathing.

Ultimately I think you're going to need to use something like SleepyHead to get a real idea of what's going on. Take a look at Pugsy's signature to find SleepyHead

Thanks for your thoughts that is definitely what I intend to do. I'll update when I have more data.
