Irritated nasal passages--constant sneezing, runny nose

Post by HorowitzJudyhorowitz » Fri Feb 08, 2013 5:48 pm

Every so often I get a terrible reaction to the CPap of irritated nasal passages, like a bad allergy attack. It feels like a cold, but I know it's not. My nose won't stop running and I'm constantly sneezing. I use the ResMedS9 with the humidifier on. My mask is the Mirage Quatro. I always had this problem when I used the nasal masks. This is the first time with th full face mask.
I'm afraid to use the mask tonight because I don't want it to continue or get worse. What is the problem and what can I do about it. Thanks. Judy

Most often it's the humidity. You may need to up your humidifier setting or reduce the setting.
I get what you describe if I forget to add water to the tank and it goes dry during the night.
Other people may get what you describe with too much moisture.
What setting are you currently using on the humidifier? If it is a low setting...increase it. If it is a high setting...reduce it.
If it is a medium setting ...toss a coin but if going with the odds..I read that most people need a little more.

The nasal mucosa moisture balance gets out of whack and when it gets out of whack it responds with the systems you are describing. Each time I have had it happen it took me 3 days before my nasal mucosa got straightened out. Very miserable 3 days.

If you think it is from being too dry...use some simple saline spray or neti pot nasal rinses during the day. They help rehydrate the nasal mucosa sooner.

It really does sound like a simple cold Judy. Go to the pharmacy and get an antihistimine like Clarirtin or Zertec...it will stop the runny nose and post nasal drip. Turn up your humidifier. If this doesn't help, see your doctor.

I have the Resmed S9 too using the nasal mask, and have had this problem as well. In my case, I think I have the moisture up to high. It's currently set on 3.5. I'll turn it down to 3 and see what happens.
