4th Night

Post by Hornpiper » Tue Jan 22, 2013 11:31 am

I almost feel guilty posting this, but after 4 nights, I am having no problems, am sleeping better than I have in years and feeling so much better during the day. I no longer feel like I'm about to doze off at a moment's notice. After a sleep study where I averaged 33 events/hour, I'm averaging one. My reason for posting is not to brag but to reassure other new folks that it does work and even if you have to work at it, it's worth the effort.

I'm on my 3rd night. So far, no issues. Thought the mask was going to be way more uncomfortable and the noise a lot more unbearable but reality is the mask I'm using is very comfortable and the noise while not totally quiet is not much more than background white noise. One issue is if I wake up in the middle of the night I have to fiddlle with the mask a little to stop little leakages. I have noticed that I'm a lot less groggy during the day but I'm not sure if it's a placebo effect or if the therapy is working. Either way - I'll take it! My wife now sleeps in the same bed with me again and my snoring has completely stopped. So all is good!

Not sure why my equipment isn't showing up. I'm using the Respironics REMStar Cflex with humidifier. My therapeautic pressure is 13CM/H20. I'm using the ramp feature for 40 mins starting at 8 CM/H20.

Im Sorry

I must be the odd one out, when i had my cpap machine i though a jumbo jet was taking off the noise was unbearable, the machine itself was extremely quiet but the mask was another issue, i am being referred back to the hospital and i can honestly say hand on heart i am not at all looking forward to it

Cheers
Stillo

I wore ear plugs even before using cpap so it might help you with the noise. You can still hear mask noise a little but the mask noise helps me sleep. I concentrate on the breathing rhythm that I can hear, next thing you know, its lights out.

I too have felt energized after using the machine and nasal pillows, and in fact, feel about 20 years younger. I believe the key is finding a mask, plugs, or whatever that you feel comfortable with. We're probably the lucky ones who had a good fit from the beginning, but from what I've read on the forum, not everyone has had a good experience from the beginning. My machine is quiet, so I guess that's a huge plus, and the air just feels sooo good.

I'm happy to hear that your experience has been positive, and I hope that everyone who is struggling can find a solution that will give them a good night's rest.

Hi,

This is fantastic to hear. Some people do get an immediate "pop" right from the start when using CPAP. I remember my first time being dialed in during my sleep study was the best few hours of sleep in my entire life.

I seem to get into a groove where things go great for about 6 months, then I'll have a month where I struggle. I don't think I change anything, but suddenly for no apparent reason, the stuff I have been doing suddenly stops working. I end up solving the problem after a few weeks, and then I'll have another 6 months or so of smooth sailing. I would have been sunk during the first week if the folks on the forum hadn't talked me off the ledge, so your voice is very welcome here.

Horn: good news! Your success is always welcome here! We often help folks thru their problems, but we also need the success stories to motivate people. To be honest with you, I feel a little guilty of my success, and I would consider myself a successful cpap poster-child. I struggle with the people here when they struggle. That's why I keep coming back to help them. Keep it up! Your body will repair itself and reward you. You may experience minor setbacks on the journey (we all experience them), but we can help you thru it.

Great news, but can you stay awake to watch Arsenal for a full 90 minutes?
