AHI numbers

Post by RestedRebel » Mon Jan 21, 2013 7:40 am

I've decided to stop using any anti-anxiety meds before going to bed. Just a couple nights ago, my AHI score was 1.7 while on the medication, but 0.0 when I didn't use the medication. I'm going to keep track of the scores to see if this trend continues.

No, the trend didn't continue. Now I need to look at what I eat for dinner and see if that has an effect on my AHI, although, I suspect it's just a matter of whether or not I spent some time on my back.

Hey RestedRebel,

I'm a newbie and trying to learn the numbers and stats. I'm on my 4th night and mine is slowly rising from 3.0 to 5.0, with CPAP of 10cm. My first sleep study, untreated, I was at 12/hr and the second sleep study on CPAP of 8cm lowered my AHI 8/hr. From what I'm understanding, The lower the AHI the better. Is this correct?

If you are trying to attain a 0.0 AHI you are going to drive yourself crazy. It is unattaiable on a regular basis. Even your 1.7 AHI is a tremendous achievment. Many of us do not get numbers that low on a regular basis even after years of CPAP usage.

I disagree!
Im using a Resmed S9 Adapt ASV & my AHI's are 0.0 on average 5 out 7 days

Even if it is unattainable on a regular basis, I'd like to experiment to see what kinds of things I do before bedtime that keep my AHI below 1. I'm fairly certainly it goes up when I sleep on my back, and when I find myself in that position, I immediately roll over.

I think we're all unique and in different stages with different problems, health issues, and lifestyles, so the only thing I can do is compare my stats from one night to another, one week to another. My monthly average is .9.

I think that each and every one of us can only judge by our own situation and probably shouldn't be comparing ourselves to one another with regards to AHI numbers, but I understand what you're saying. My AHI numbers are relatively low and no cause for concern, but if I keep monitoring them and figure out what is going on, I can prevent myself from having higher numbers as I continue to use my machine.

Yes that's right, the lower the better and it will vary. Everyone will be different and a sleep specialist is best placed to interpret your numbers, but 3 to 5 is way better than 8 to 12! A good test is how you feel. You may not be feeling much improvement after 4 nights and for some people it's a slow, gradual path but you're on the right path.
