How do you label masks?

Post by -tim » Sat Jan 19, 2013 9:09 pm

I tend to alternate between masks each night and now I can't tell the newer one from the older ones as it has lost some of its new look.

I tried to make them with sharpie permeant marker but that didn't work so well on the silicone.

What do other people use to label these things?

Make the sharpie marks on the headgear--with a SILVER sharpie.

I used to switch masks every other week when I was having an drying issue - that gave each mask ample drying time before I had to use it again, but now I have a dryer. I also found that both masks deteriorated at the same amount of time as if I were using one mask, so it really didn't save me any money, but actually cost me more. (I always purchased the alternate mask).

My specific mask comes in light pink, dark pink and light blue. So one mask was one color and the other was another color. You might want to try getting a hair tie and cutting it and simply tie around one of the pieces of your mask. It's washable, so it can go into the bath with the rest of your mask.

Keep them in different bags and label the bags?

I alternate between 2 of the same mask as well. One still looks new but I don't know what to do when they both start looking alike. But the mask are only 1 month apart in age. They'll probably both go bad around the same time so it will be ok.

I have some concern about putting masks in bags - even if they are dry, condensation could form and cause little thingies to grow.

Fishy
If you put one of hose little packs of dessicant that comes in pill bottles or some uncooked rice in the bag you will be sure not to get any moisture.
I have 3 masks I work with...all I do is once one is washed and ready to wear I put at the back of the drawer, every Sunday when I change, I just rotate them so that I am using the next one in line. The one that needs cleaning is in the sink ready to be washed, that leaves 2...the first one in the line is the one I use for the next week.
I tried the marker bit...what a disaster.....I ruined 3 sets of pillows and cushions. Some of the marker came off in the night and marked up my mask liner and my face....and I made sure it was totally dry before I used it
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I have a bag full of swift FX pillows I've boiled; and now they all look and feel the same.
Most I bought before I learned about boiling. Boy, could I have saved a lot of money!
If you treat them right, they seem to last nearly indefinitely!

Thanks for the hint, Nan I'll remember about the rice. The dessicant packets scare me, don't want the pets to get it.

Although I have never had a problem telling mine apart, I also have different colored (homemade) fleece strap covers on the bottom headgear straps.

My "primary" UMFF mask is nearly eight years old and has signs of repairs I've made after I accidentally dropped it on the floor and the forehead support broke about 2 1/2 years ago......fixed with Krazy Glue. My "backup" UMFF mask is attached to a backup machine and rarely gets used. I also have two unopened new-in-box UMFF masks for possible future use.

The only time I did any alternating was about two years ago when I alternated the two for about a week or two at a time for a couple of months to see how a 6-year-old seal (my original one) compared to a little-used one on the backup mask I purchased in 2007 (using the same machine and the same headgear). Ironically, the 6-year-old one had a better leak rate than the little-used one.......but I changed the seal anyway, because over the years I had purchased a number of replacements (out-of-pocket) that I wanted to try. I have the original seal stashed away in case I want to try it again some day.

You could also use a Krazy Glue pen and draw a number on the outside of each one somewhere. Highly unlikely that it will wash or wear off.

Use something like an Ice pick and make a dot or two somewhere on the hard plastic. You could also put something like a cable tie, a loop of wire, or a rubber band around some part of the mask.

Do this on the part of the mask where sanitation is less of a concern, i.e. on the dry areas of the mask frame that don't touch your skin or the airflow.
