S9 and SD card errors

Post by mindxing » Sat Jan 19, 2013 11:16 am

I'm hoping that someone can help me with the dreaded "invalid SD card" error that keeps happening on the ResMed S9 devices. I've seen several different discussions on this problem and so far none of the suggestions have helped. When I first got my S9 I pulled the data from the reader daily without any trouble. After about 9 months I started getting an occasional "invalid SD card" error when I would insert the card into the S9. The frequency of the error kept increasing so that now (after about 14 months) I am getting the error almost everytime that I insert the card.

In order to isolate the problem as much as possible I've tried to eliminate different scenarios (e.g. locking the SD card, ejecting, etc.).

I think that the problem is with the ResMed device. If I turnoff the ResMed device (using the power button) and then immediately turn it back on I get the "invalid SD card" error. This is without removing the card or taking it to my computer or doing anything else with it. Once I rewrite the card then the error goes away and I can turn the machine off/on multiple times without getting the error. I will try again tomorrow morning after a night of data recording and see what happens.

I would really like to resolve this issue so any info would be helpful.

Mindxing,

I do not have a S9 yet, I'm looking to upgrade my R460P, but I do occasionally have the same issue with my SD cards in my photography gear. The exact same issue you described here. To my surprise, SD cards can go bad in some memory sectors on the chip. So, I purchased new SD cards and the problem was fixed. This is why professional wedding photographers use cameras with dual cards, one might go bad.

I don't know if this helps, but it sure sounds the same. Please keep us posted on your fix. I want to buy an S9 next month and I'm hoping its a good machine.

I go thru a couple of cards per year. I do not frequently take them out of the machine... only occasionally, but it still happens.

The only thing that works for me is using different (better) SD card. The Resmed cards seem to have issues as they age. Possibly the contacts are cheap. Any other brand seems to work with no problems.

Do we have to use the CPAP manufacture's cards or can we buy professional photography SD cards? These are usually much better quality and more reliable.

Any type will work. There are cheap ones and more expensive ones. You can get them at Walmart or any department store. Sheriff

I had a resmed card fail and I just used another cheap card. Sometimes you can put the card in the computer and tell it to reformat it or use the option on the cpap to erase the card but sometimes the cards have just failed.

Some machines are limited to 2 gigabyte cards which are starting to be hard to find. You may be able to find pack of 4 of them for about $10 and flash cards do fail so cheap spares might be a good idea. They will be "SD" and not "SD HC" or "SD XC". Most machines won't use use the extra space anyway so sometimes smaller cards work fine if you have them around. My S9 is happy with an old 128mb card for at least one night but I'm not sure what it will do when it fills it up.

My 560 can cope with 4 gig cards but I'm not sure about the s9. I'm sure I tried it but I don't remember the results and I can't find the card 16G card that should be on the desk so I can't retry it now.

Dumb Question - could it be out of room on one of the files, or could the card be full. I do not know how much data is written every night, but if you are using the same one with fourteen months of data, maybe it's full?

The s9 delete large files over 7 days so it shouldn't run out of room on a 2 gig card ever. There is an old post about that somewhere.

I found the 16 gig card, plugged it in the s9 autoset and it said it was invalid and erased it and copied its data back on to it so it appears that an generic SD HC card should work fine and you don't have to hunt for the older smaller capacity ones.

Highly unlikely.

SD cards are consumable items - get a new one

Cheers,

Thanks for all of the advice. I purchased a new SD card (4GB) and have been using that. It is working perfectly now.
