Nasal masks cover the nose...cover the nostrils and part of the nose up to the bridge of the nose. Usually a triangular cushion and has a moderate area of mask material that touches all the way around the nose. Larger area to keep a good seal and leaks can be a problem up by the bridge of the nose and then that area is also easily torn or bruised.

Nasal pillow masks have little cushions that have little inner cones that slide barely up inside the nostril. Nothing goes over the nsoe ....doesn't touch the bridge of the nose. Only area that needs seal is at the nostril

This is the nasal pillow mask that I use

This is a nasal mask. Various forms. Some made of cloth even but cover the nose in a triangle pattern.

Pugsy,
Thank you very much . Now, i think probably a Nasal Pillow is the best when it comes to reading books, watching TV and typing home work on a computer. Correct?

Yes, he nasal pillows typically don't have anything that is up on the nose to get in the way of the eyes trying to read or watch TV unless someone wants to route the hose up over their head. Then it might be a distraction there in the middle of the eyes.
The one I use has a very minimal presence on the face. Super light weight too where some of the nasal masks have hard plastic shells that the cushion sits in and tend to be a bit heavy on the face.

Now there is a new nasal mask coming out real soon called the Wisp. It might not block the vision too bad but it has a bit more straps on the face and it does stick out on the tip of the nose a bit. I haven't see one yet to know for sure.

Hi,

This is what sold me on nasal pillows. The minimal presence on the face is really nice, as well as the light weight. In the past, I ran at pretty high pressures, and it was a little more of a challenge to get a nasal pillow mask to work. It was worth the extra time and effort to learn how to get it to seal and to stop leaks.

A side effect of using a nasal pillow mask is that the air flow through my nose really helps to keep my sinuses clear. Even if CPAP didn't help me sleep better, the clear sinuses when I wake up makes CPAP worth the effort.

Curious, why would a mask be worn while reading, watching TV or using a computer?
My Opus 360 nasal pillow is similar to Pugsy's, but the Opus hose is attached from the pillows to the top; has eliminated my waking up with the hose wrapped around my neck.

Some people will watch TV, read, or compute in bed and put the mask on in case they fall asleep. Or do these things without taking off the CPAP mask when they wake up and can't sleep.

Some people also wear the CPAP mask while doing other things to help themselves get used to using CPAP. It's good for those having a hard time sleeping with CPAP.

The reason is that, some of us like me for example do fall asleep while reading. The same is true with TV or doing work on the computer. I think, a nasal pillow that does not block the vision or cause any distraction might provide some relief in this respect.

Nasal Pillows Brand Line Preference - Top 5 over Q1 (Jan-Mar 03, 2013)

1 Swift FX (ResMed) 37.2% $127.65 36.6% $127.73 1.6%
2 Aloha (RespCare) 12.2% $84.00 10.4% $85.99 17.4%
3 Swift II (ResMed) 9.1% $121.00 10.6% $121.00 14.2%
4 Breeze (Puritan Bennett) 8.4% $80.50 11.1% $81.24 24.4%
5 TAP PAP (Airway Management) 7.1% $128.96 0% $0.00 N/a

Can someone comments on Aloha and if its helping him or her? Probably, its the best in air leakage. I may be incorrect.

When I first tried nasal pillows, they felt cold and the air sort of felt harsh. They also made my nose sore.

Recently, I got a Swift FX nasal pillow mask. I tried it a few hours each night, sometimes switched back to my ComfortGel nasal mask due to soreness. I also would skip the FX some nights entirely as my nose got used to it. Now, the FX feels really comfortable. I'm not sure how much of that is a tougher nose, and if I'm not somehow fitting it better. It does seem to fit a lot better now than it did at first. There is a certain degree of finesse in fitting it and wearing it.

Many people find the nose feels better if they use "Lanisnoh HPA lanolin" before donning the nasal pillow mask. I didn't do that and I had some soreness, but I don't get sore any more.

I'm supposed to get a new mask every 3 months. I like my nasal mask, even after just a week of use. But I do have sensitive skin, so I might try a nasal pillow next time. I'm thinking that after 3 months, I could probably still use my nasal mask if I don't like the nasal pillow.

Are they really in such bad shape after 3 months that they need to be replaced? I was surprised at that. Could I get away with six months with my nasal mask if I hate the nasal pillow?

I was told I may be able to go 6 month with my nasal pillow, my Dr said why waste the money every 3 months if it is not needed even though its covered by insurance. I would imagine the nasal mask would hold up longer than the pillow, he did say to keep an eye on it though.

The hard plastic part (frame) of the Nasal mask will last forever & does not need to be replaced every 3 months.
But, you may want to do it after 3 months at least once to have a spare in case any part on it breaks.
Or, you can use that 3 month window to try a different mask.

The Nasal Mask "cushion" has a replacement schedule of 2 per month.
They also last longer than that.
I bought a full ResMed ComfortGel Nasal Mask just over a month ago.
Only the cushion is showing signs of needing to be replaced (leaks a little & headgear (strap) needs to be tightened a little more.

In the next couple of days, I will buy 2 cushions only & that should last me a couple of months. But, I will order 2 more cushions after 1 month so that I do not get into the situation I am in now where I have a cushion that needs to be replaced, but I have no extra one & will have to wait a few days for the DME to ship cushions to me.
