I had to deal with this myself. Before, I would wash my face, use toner, then apply moisturizer, both morning and at bedtime. I have stopped the moisturizer at bedtime. I am diligent about continuing my routine and DO apply the moisturizer more generously in the mornings.

This has worked well for me.

I use Cerave at the recommendation of my dermatologist. I use the body lotion, AM face lotion, cleanser for dry skin, and PM lotion. Cerave contains an ingredient (I believe hyloronic) that makes your skin better from the inside out. I really like it. I make the liners from old t shirts and have no problem with leaks.

The lotion works great on legs - keeps the skin from getting that crepe dry look.

The best way to moisturize the skin is to stay well hydrated. Or like we used to say in the good ole days, drink enough water.

It really depends on where you live and the time of year.
Right now in Alberta it is -18c outside and the heat inside is going full blast. Now this is already a very dry climate, so dry that whenever I visited here I had a sore throat. Most Canadian houses in the winter are drier then the Gobi desert even with in house humidifiers going full blast. I slather Aveeno all over my legs and arms every night to keep it from going itchy dry. When my youngest visits here she has to buy special cortisone cream to keep from losing her skin.

Oh yes, I also find moisturizers help even though my climate is not so severe as yours BlackSpinner!

"Moisturizer", I think, is a misnomer. They don't provide moisture but instead create a barrier to hold moisture in.
