No more moisturizers?

Post by Summer Rain » Thu Jan 10, 2013 1:08 pm

Here is a question for the ladies out there who like to use moisturizers on their skin.....I was told that I shouldn't because it screws up the "seal" on my mask? Good grief! GOOD BY SKIN ! HUH ?

In spite of millions of dollars worth of advertising, cosmetic products have little or no positive effect on the health of skin.
Prescription topical medications are different, and OTC products would not be available if they were that powerful.
The best thing for your skin is good health, especially good nutrition, adequate water, and quality sleep.
A cream or lotion may temporarily make your skin appear healthier; but if there is alcohol in the formula,
it may actually be drying your skin. If you feel you must use a lotion, avoid any that contain petroleum products;
because of the the damage mineral oil, petroleum jelly and related products do to silicone, thus affecting seal.
A product formulated just for cpap use is this:

This is also safe to use, and can be quite sticky (helping a seal), and leaving luxuriously soft skin in the morning:

I use moisturizer during the day, because it does temporarily smooth wrinkles. However, at night, after I wash my face, I do not use any 'cause who sees me then, anyway? I have noticed (I use a nasal mask) that the pores in my nose are clearing out beautifully due to the humidifier keeping my nose moist during the night. An added bonus to using my CPAP!

Any opinions on coconut oil as a moisturizer?

Put the moisturizers on a bit earlier and use a mask liner to prevent it from touching the mask. It is important to keep routines that make you feel secure or comforted and that signal bed time.

Certain ingredients in moisturizers can 'damage' the mask. Petroleum products are supposedly not good.

I use moisterizer earlier in the evening and then wipe my face with toner (no alcohol) before bed. That's if i'm organized. If not I use moisterizer and go right to bed. Doesn't seem to hurt my mask.

Get cold pressed virgin coconut oil. I use it in my hair and on my body. I don't use it on my face because my cats try to lick it off. ouch

What is a mask liner? Where do you get them?

I use a routine of skin care that makes me 'feel' like I'm doing something for my skin. My mom wrinkled at a very early age. I was determined not to repeate her mistakes - she used nothing but Witch Hazel. That is an astringent, very drying. After her wrinkles started, moisturizer didn't help. I've used a 'day cream' & 'night cream' as a part of my beauty ritual, and it seems to be working (I've done this since my early 20's, in my 50's now).

I've been on CPAP 12 yrs & I always use my bedtime cream about an hour before bedtime, letting it soak in good before using my mask. I've never had a mask damaged by my creams, I'm currently using Wei East, with occasional 1 week switch-off to give my skin a little 'confusion break'. I don't think any of these have petriolum or anything greasy (greasy creams sit on top of my skin & do not absorb well), but I'm going to check my ingredients. I think if used before bed in time for them to absorb into the skin, skin creams can't hurt.

There is something very valid to the idea that the best skin is produced by good nutrition and good hydration (plenty of water & vegies), but I still feel more comfortable with my regime. If you have a nightime ritual, I agree with BlackSpinner that keeping to the evening routine can be good for you in preparing for your restful nights sleep.
Jen

You can make your own with an old T shirt.

You can buy them from Padacheek. Months and months of use out of one.

Or mainly single night's use

I don't understand why someone would say moisturizer don't help because they do. I moisturize in the morning or if
I remember to wash my face and moisturize way before bed. It is important to take care of your skin and yourself.
I have a friend who stopped using her machine because she didn't want marks from the mask, well guess what, she
will look really great for her final goodbye but she should be more worried about her heart and body than her skin.
I say you can have both. Get a good nights sleep and moisturize in the morning.

Pugsy has some great links but I make my own. The mask "burned" the skin beside my nose the first night I wore it. I always wear a liner with the quatro. I made mine out of some old "big girl" cotton panties. Just lay the mask on the fabric and trace around the mask with about 2 inches out. Fold in half vertically and cut a small triangle for the nose and mouth. Lay it on the mask, bend over and apply to face. Adjust the triangle until it fits comfortably over nose and mouth, trim the edges. Now lay it on a piece of paper and trace it for future use. Pada cheek makes ones that are easier to use but I couldn't wait.

Liners make the mask so much more comfortable, no icky plasticy thing on your face. Padacheek also makes fleecy strap covers so your face doesn't get marked up from them.
