Help how do you avoid rain out when in a warmer climate?

Post by DebboL » Wed Jan 09, 2013 5:43 am

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd turn to everyone for some sage words of advice. I'm in Florida right now for a class and will be here until the 17th. I'm having a hard time adjusting the humidifer to a point where I can stand it. I don't have an air conditioner at home so this is getting even harder for me. My question is how do you avoid the rain out syndrome? I've turned my humidifer down to 1 and it is too cool for me and when I turn it up to 3 it seems as if it is too warm. I have been trying every number there is on my machine except for 4 or 5 as I know that would be too much humidity. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I'm barely keeping my mask on 4 hours.

First make sure you have it placed lower than your head as water can't run uphill , and second, are you sure you need it?

It's a comfort thing, not 'therapy' in itself and if humidity's good where you are to begin with, why bother? Many of us don't use it at all, or only intermittently.

Can you vary the temperature of the air coming into the tube? Maybe lowering this might help. Would a climate control hose work better in controlling the humidity within the hose?

Believe it or not HYBERNITE. Most rain out's occur when the moisture and air traveling though the hose is cooler than the outer tempeture, thus creating condisation to form in the tube and create this puddle we call rain out. So a heated circuit tubing keeps everything consistent giving you better moisture and less rain out.

Try the cheap solution first.
Spiral wrap the tubing lightly with a long narrow strip of fleece, using rubber bands to hold the ends on.
Instant hose cozy. Materials available in most fabric shops' remnant bin.

A hose cover only costs about $10. Easy to put on and take off for hose cleaning etc. DEAN

Thanks everyone!

My cpap is lower than the bed that is for sure. I think because the room was cool that the moisture was building up in my mask as I have a Pilairo mask. I adjusted the humidity to 2 and that seems to be helping. Someone said to not use the humidifier however when you have Sjogrens, which causes chronic dryness of the mouth, eyes, etc, then going without the humidifer would be extremely painful for me as the air would dry me out too much. The moisture buildup has lessened that is for sure. I wish I knew where to get a hose wrap here. I tried checking in with the local CVS and they couldn't help me. I will just have to suck it up until I get back home on the 17th and then buy one.

Go to a Dollar General store or walmart and go find a cheap fluffy, light weight scarf. Some of them have a hole in the middle (entire length) of the scarf because there are 2 sides to the scarf. Open it up and slide it over the hose. Secure with scotch tape or rubber bands. I got one that looked like a black boa at the Dollar store 3 years ago. Not perfect but it did help and only cost $3.
