Adjust Pressure

Post by houso44 » Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:18 pm

G'day for Australia.
I'm a newby and really haven't had many problems....yet.
I have a Resmed S9 with all the 'bells and whistles' etc.
My original sleep diagnosis was for max pressure of 9.
Is it possible to override the setting so the max i get is 9. Sometimes it goes up to 16 (on auto) and It just doesn't feel right.
Thanks for any replies.

If your numbers went up to 16, I wouldn't be setting things lower, but possibly even higher if you can stand it. There was a reason they went up so high, even if it was a one night aberration, but you need to look into it before you try and force the machine to cheat you of therapy (which is what you could do if you reset it). At least talk to your doctor or tech about it.

Hi Ian - how is OZ (someday I hope to see that land and that sky!!)

Pressure maxing out like that may indicate breathing stability problems.

If you have gained weight you might look at upping the lower pressure a bit.

It might be good to raise the head of your bed a bit - that should give you a bit more headroom above the point where apneas occure and so away from high pressure use.

I have found stress to be the major contributor to breathing instability. Less stress, better PAP therapy in general.

Have a lot of fun in OZ!

Welcome houso44. You would not be the first person to receive your machine with the pressure(s) not set according to the doctor's prescription. If I were you I would feel pretty comfortable to go into the clinical menu and set the max pressure to where the doctor wanted it. Then watch to make sure your apnea is well managed -- at the very least check your AHI on the machine in the morning or better yet download the free software and take a closer look on your computer. That data will help you and your doctor decide if your pressure needs to be adjusted.

I agree with Julie's message. The machine would not have gone up to 16 unless it was necessary to stop an apnea from occuring. A max pressure of 9 does not seem realistic...that would mean that your average pressure was about 6-7 which is unlikely.

The lowest it can go is 4, but most people find that they feel like they are suffocating at 4 or 5.Also, you are unlikely to get any therapy at such a low pressure. It will take more time for it to get up to the needed pressure. Most people are okay with 6 as their minimum. What range is your machine currently set to?
