YEEHHAA

Post by fishy » Fri Dec 28, 2012 11:52 am

O.K. I got 4 1/2 hrs sleep last night on my cpap. Now, I don't want to jinx myself, but I was without ANY sleep for 3 days because I couldn't sleep with the cpap. My wife (who happens to be a respiratory therapist) suggested I use a full nasal mask rathert than a nasal pillow. I did and used a respironics True Blue. Well, it may have been the lack of sleep, but it also felt more comfortable breathing into a plenum rather than the nasal pillow which seemed to force the air more directly. Could have been I was exhausted. I'll continue with the True Blue tonight and see how it goes. It really felt good to get some sleep on the cpap.

I downloaded sleepyhead but my cardreader for my pc hasnt arrived yet so I dont know if there were any leaks. Other than that. I'm looking forward to see if I can go 2 nights in a row!!

Yeah Fishy. Amazing how 4 hours feels when you haven't had any sleep previously on the machine.

Much continued success.

Hi fishy,
Congratulations on your success! I got my machine last Monday and have yet been able to fall asleep. I too have Nasal Pillows and have found that the force directly in my nostrils is disconcerting at best. I am going to try a full face mask such as the Mirage Quatto. I am looking forward to the day when I can post a similar message such as yours. I wish you continued success and peaceful sleep.

Hi,

The 4 hours of sleep I got during my titration study (once they got me dialed in) was the first real sleep that I had in years. It was amazing. it was like I woke up in nirvana. I can only image how good that felt with no sleep at all for 3 days.

Note that your mask preference will probably change as you evolve further into your CPAP experience. I was really turned off by nasal pillows at first due to the intense focused airflow. However, after I got more used to CPAP, I suddenly found that I preferred the pillows. For now, do what you can to get some more hours on the machine, and later you can circle back and look to optimize things. You probably have a real advantage having an RT spouse since you have a pro in the house and she likely has access to all kinds of masks. Try out as many as you can. I think I went through 8 or 9 masks before I settled on the Swift LT for the long haul.

Yeah, I'm hanging on to my nasal pillow. The True Blue was an extra that "fell out of her car and got lost". I'll try a few others that she may lose and let you know. The true blue is a medium and I'm thinking a small may be better...but I think it will definitely be trial and error for a while.

The last 3 days I was miserable. Today, I played "Just Dance 4" with my kids on the wii. I was sweating like I haven't in a while.

Congrats fishy! I would stay with the set-up that ultimately has the best results.

Congratulations. It is great to hear this.

I have never been able to manage pillows. I try again every so often but always go back to nasal cushion masks.

I hope you continue to extend your sleep hours.

4 hrs last night with cpap. Overall, not as much sleep as I'd like...but still good that I've slept 2 nights in a row!

Congratulations on the 2 nights in a row - may it increase from here! Also, congratulations on having an RT for a wife - I hope she learns from your trials and tribulations, and takes that to her next patient who is having difficulty with their mask

Yeah, having an RT for a wife is a mixed blessing. She tries to micromanage my cpap...but I try to do it based on what people on here say - like many recommended the nasal pillow. Then when she is right it is always, "I told you so!" Anyway, I purchased the travel hose buddy and am looking for 3 nights in a row. I think the mask is a bit big and am going to get a TrueBlue small (I have a medium now and it comes close to touching my eyes or if I lower it, it presses on my upper teeth). I looking forward to the day when I don't think about how much sleep I will get on it.

I've been using the nasal pillows for about 15 years now. My upper lip caterpillar interferes with most masks, but I've been quite satisfied with the breeze system overall. Working on towboats means I have to adapt my hose arrangement for each different boat I work on, so the over-the-head arrangement is easiest to work with (for me anyhow). Some years back, my machine crashed and we were 4 days from port. By the time we got into town, I was barely making any sense and I don't remember a great deal of my visit to Praxair for a replacement machine. I do know that once I got back to the boat I slept a solid 12 hours, and the only reason I woke up was that I was thirsty as all get-out. I learned a hard lesson on that. Soon after, I managed to get a back-up machine and have never been without one since.

Thanks Chris. Last night I slept 5 hrs on the cpap. That is 3 nighs in a row. The down side seems to be I am getting up at 3-4 am and cannot go back to sleep even if I remove the mask. Is this normal?

I'm confused. Your info says you have a PRS1. Since they take standard SD cards, you should be able to use a camera, GPS, etc... as a cardreader. They also carry them at the dollar store for <$10
When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI
