OT, flu, what do doctors do for flu patients?

Post by purple » Wed Dec 19, 2012 8:07 pm

I know my doctors office if really busy with flu patients, but I though that there was not much a doc could do for flu until it got to be, like pneumonia stage. so why is ever one going to see the doc???

I really do not know what they could do.

What I do is:

1. Keep Gatorade on hand - it hydrates (replenishes water to your system) 50 times faster than water. Most of the ill feeling of flu comes from dehydration.

2. Eat Yogurt - seems to calm the tummy and I think the calcium is good. I like it plain.

3. I try to get out a bit or at least move around a bit each day. I remember one winter setting up a step so I could get my blood pumping and lungs breathing a bit. I think this helps clear things out of the lungs and digestive systems and gets things moving so disease cannot strike a hold in lungs or other parts of the body. Not major exercise by any means - just to keep things going.

4. Keep warm. All parts. Legs, arms, neck - the whole thing.

5. I think the old chicken soup idea is good. The problem today is that no one makes actual stock anymore. For me after I bake it, let it cool (rest as long as cook) and separate the meat from the rest - the rest goes into a pot for at least 6 hours - then the first stock is taken - "the rest" is then placed on a pan in a 350 degree oven and baked while turning from time to time until it is a golden brown - back into the pot with water to cover and 4 or so oz of vinegar and simmer for at least 12 hours breaking up the bones if you wish. The thing is the stuff between bones and the makings of the makers of cells comes out by this process and so can go into me to provide the building blocks my body needs to heal. And besides, the flavor is awesome!

May you find good health soon!

Excuses for work, check to see if the symptoms indicate flu, or perhaps some other condition that needs treatment, suggest or prescribe medicines that help symptoms like cough syrup, give advice about sleep, food, rest, water, etc. I've had the doctor do some sort of test and then told me it wasn't flu.

Lots of people think they have flu, when, in fact, it's something else.

There are some antivirus drugs, but I and a lot of the experts are skeptical about their benefit, especially if you don't take them early. I'm also skeptical about their safety. They are monkeying with DNA and RNA. I think these things are mostly to make the patients feel better because they got something.

I'll also throw out my oft repeated suggestion for people to get a pneumonia vaccine before they get the flu. It's relatively cheap, safe, long lasting, and pneumonia can be a really bad thing. The vaccine helps, but doesn't stop all strains of pneumonia.

And get your flu shot. 40,000 people a year die from flu in the US.

This is what I do, I run out to the store to gather these items and take a week off of work. KFC will last the duration if you get a big enough bucket

One more warning. Don't take more than the recommended dose of NyQuil or similar products. Don't take Tylenol and Nyquil. Check all your products for Acetaminophen/Tylenol/paracetamol/APAP. They're all the same thing.

In this case, "APAP" refers to the chemical in Tylenol. For some reason, they call it APAP when you get it in high power mixes like hydrocodone/vicoden.

You can OD on Acetaminophen if you take multiple drugs with acetaminophen.

Acetaminophen OD can damage your liver and leave you screwed up for life.

Everyone should have gotten their shot. If you didn't...there is still time. It takes 2 weeks for it to work and the flu season goes through March.

I prefer sugar water. Flu gone in a mere seven days.

I suddenly came down with the flu a few days after Thanksgiving. My doctor did a nasal swab and said I had influenza a. I was shocked b/c I had gotten my flu shot back in September. I guess the strain I got was not the one covered by my flu shot. She prescribed Tamiflu which helped greatly. I ended up being admitted to the hospital and had to take prednisone and nebulizer treatments b/c of lung involvement. I hope I never catch the flu again.

I take a good quality bee propolis capsule every day between November and April, more when I feel a scratchy throat or people around me are sick and a rude enough not to cover their coughs and sneezes.

I've had the flu twice in my almost 60 years and have worked with the public most of that time. Only started getting flu shots 4 years ago.

Cheers,
xena
