Senior citizen with Mumps and Cpap

Post by Stormynights » Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:32 pm

I will be 65 in a few months and I ended up catching the mumps. I have no idea when I got exposed. Wearing a mask has been very difficult but I kept my Sleepweaver very loose. I am not sure about the therapy I got and I am afraid to check my data. I will be so glad when I am back to normal. This is a miserable condition.

Make absolutely sure your doctor is involved in your treatment/recovery.
Mumps can be quite nasty for adults (even deadly)
The doc may even have medication to help with the symptoms.
Get well, soon!

Thank you Chunky Frog. They said that there was nothing to be done but let it run it's course. I can't take pain medicine except over the counter meds. It is so painful.

It is possible to use deep breathing and slowed exhalation to
hyperventilate a bit to alleviate intense bouts of pain.
You can't do it all the time, but I used it for bad cramps years ago.

I just used Tylenol and Benedril at night. I am much better now. I am into my second week. Trying to eat is the hardest.

A word of warning to all of us---the mumps vaccine immunity weans off more frequently than the other measles/rubella doses. When I worked in Employee Health for decades, mumps non-immunity on labs requiring booster vaccines occurred in about a third of new hires if they were over 40.
Contagiousness lingers for weeks, hence the mask. These "childhood" diseases are so much more serious with age. My sympathy for having mumps with your CPAP.

I would advise everyone to get their booster shot.

I had mumps, measles and rubella as a kid in the very olden days. Does that immunity remain lifelong? I'm about to get the shingles vaccine my older patients with shingles never looked very happy. Thanks for the warning about things most of us have forgotten about-- or maybe I'm just speaking for myself?

So sorry for your pain & suffering. I'm glad you posted, otherwise most of us who are a bit older might not have known that our childhood immunizations could wear off. I never thought about it. Hope you feel better soon,
Jen

Stormy, I've heard of people going thru a second childhood but it seems you have carried that to an uncomfortable extreme!!

Its good to read you are starting to mend.

Yes Lynda, PLEASE PLEASE get your shingles shot ASAP. I have to wait till I’m 60 years old here in Colorado. Mom got shingles this past 8/11/2012, I had to take care of both parents at that time for 6 weeks. Like others have told her, she’ll get a little bit better every day which has been the truth. I agree with Mom on that one sickness, I’d NEVER wish it on anyone!

I had the measles, chicken pox and mumps when I was little also. Come Monday morning, I’m calling my primary physician to see what they have to say and see what I need to do in the area of prevention too.

Stormy – I’m very sorry you’re not feeling well. Wishing you a speedy recovery. My parents just left. Hubby made us delicious Sunday gravy spaghetti (that part is the truth). When I read your post, I ran to my kitchen and made you some hot apple pie. Unfortunately, it’s very late so I couldn’t run to the store to buy some ice cream for you. Hope you like the pie. In addition, I had some ingredients to make you some hot buttered rum. Earlier this week, I purchased a bottle of rum, so I’m giving you the bottle and let you decide on how much hootch you want. Hey, if it doesn’t make you feel better, at least it will do something for the tummy and soul. Lastly, when you’re not in the mood for hot buttered rum, I also made you some hot spiced lemon apple cider to warm you up (never made that before which is the truth). Yummmmm!!! I believe you‘ll REALLY like it. I believe this will help you through your recovery. I have a friend who lives in Oklahoma and I called her up right away. Such a great friend. I explained I didn’t know where you lived. However, she feels she knows you by your logon name, Stormynights. When I told her the news of your sickness, she hopped on the next plane to Denver, came to my house, grabbed the goodies and took the next flight home and will be delivering you the care package first thing in the morning, so look for her. Like I said, she is SUCH a great friend. I just hope everything remains warm. Let me know how you like it. Get well soon.

I got shingles a while ago, and got on acyclovir real early on. That helped a lot, but it was still no fun.

Needless to say, I've also had the shingles vaccine now.

She left everything on the porch because she was afraid to come inside. The dog ate it. Now I am really sick.

The dog sleeps outside for that one! At least for a couple of nights.
That dog must have SOME hangover after finding a way to open the bottle of rum , or were you able to at least salvage that?
